networkn: As someone else mentioned the combat starts interesting but becomes repetitive. It's a large game you'll enjoy it I expect. Not a Potter fan but enjoying this game so far. It's a little grindy in places but still good fun
3 months without a gaming device seems awful. I am hoping a ps5 slim comes out soon as I find travelling with the ps5 a pita.

Just finished playing Hogwarts Legacy and you were right, I did enjoy it - a lot. You’re also correct in that it’s a massive game. In-game, non-paused play time was 125 hours. Per my usual approach, I squeezed everything I could out of the game - got 100% completion according to the game (cleared, collected and upgraded every single thing) and got 37/46 trophies. I wasn’t really trying for the trophies and didn’t go further because IMO a lot of them are just a bit silly.

Overall I thought the game was brilliant and beautifully realised - perhaps a bit cheesy and juvenile at times but that was part of the appeal. Although the combat was somewhat repetitive, I still liked it. Very enjoyable hitting enemies with spell combos which, by the end of the game, were very powerful. The broom-flying mechanic is really well done too. Flying beasts, not so much.

Now waiting for Star Wars - Jedi Survivor to arrive in the mail from a Trademe purchase.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Playing Diablo IV. It's massive - already on level 34 and I haven't even finished Act 2 - so much stuff left behind. Once I get a mount it will be easier to complete a lot of the caves around the world.

I'm only on lv22 and not even done with act 1...I see you also like to not leave things undone or behind, but with d4 one will have to come back, it's just massive and end game challenges spawning in the starter area.

The mount isn’t unlocked until act 4 or so, it certainly makes travelling easier for picking up things left behind.

Friends have ‘finished’ the game, through the campaign, thanks to the long weekend. They’re now back in the woodwork and probably going to disappear until another big release comes out haha.

Kind of relieved I didn’t spend $150, still had fun sitting in discord and laughing along with them while they screen shared.

Yip, thats it, you can rush the game and finish it quite quickly but I do feel you miss a lot of the storyline. They did what they did back in the day with D2, the side quest storylines are very mich tied in with the main quest, so it give good perspective. I was/am in two minds if I must rush the main story and get my mount then come back or just play at my pace and get at act 4 when I do....

I wouldn’t say they rushed it, just the main campaign with side quests and aspect dungeons that were close got them to lv45 quickly. Main missions give quite a lot of exp. Then again they don’t get to play much often so this was an event for them, 4-6 hours per day over fri-mon (they took friday off hah).

All things considered it’s somewhat short for an arpg, though the indication that theres at least two major DLC’s coming is probably why. Friends did other things during the day and still had plenty of time to work through at their pace.

Probably why they won’t come back until expansions come out, not enough time for grinding loot and too old for pvp is what they said.

So after playing it from release day to now, I can share a few thoughts.

It's pretty.

It's Diablo.

I prefer a mouse and keyboard to console controller.

It's difficult. The bosses at the end of some dungeons seem impossible.

It's not a pickup and put-down game. You can't start a mission and not complete it, otherwise, you need to redo it pretty much from scratch. You never know whether it's a 5-minute dungeon or a 1-hour dungeon, that is frustrating.

The game could have done a better job explaining the interface, and some functions. I have watched a few 'new to d4' videos and that has helped a LOT.

It's a LOT of game. So many modifiers, and things that can change your equipment and stats, it's almost too much for a casual gamer to absorb.

Wait times to get in have been less than 20 seconds for me, usually 5-10 seconds. I expect that to change today.

As mentioned above, the dungeon sizes are massive - not too different from Diablo III, but there are many more dungeons now. The bosses aren't impossible, but they demand a lot of work. And there are a few areas in the land that are two levels above yours, so you have to plan for those well.

Level up seems faster, or I am just putting more hours per session than before.

PsychoSmiley:

My interest in Diablo IV is whether we get our $10 PS5 version from the Warehouse. There was a pricing error a while back and we jumped on it. It's still in the system so we'll find out if/when something turns up in the mail next week.

Well that's a no go. Conveniently the order is 'glitched' and they can't process it properly so the only option is a refund.

Guess I wait till whenever this becomes cheap as hell and I buy it then.

Does it have a changeable difficulty setting - as in many other games?

There are freely changeable world tiers which affect enemy health etc. while also increasing xp, rewards etc.

The game is very much a loot/gear based system, for those not familiar with arpg genre. In majority of stages in the game you can get away with optimising a build around skills with gear items and using it to breeze through encounters.

Yes, but I can't be bothered switching world zones for Dungeons, feels... counter-intuitive.

The final bosses in some dungeons are 'optional' and give nice rewards, but if you die a few times trying to achieve it, the rewards are offset by the cost to bring your weapons back to 100 durabilities.

There is one dungeon where you need to get 3 tomes, and for most bosses you can see that if you use a particular pattern you can beat them if you are good enough, I was getting smashed so easily and dodging and running away wasn't effective, so I gave it a miss.

I guess there will be balancing changes over time.

As a barbarian, the first skill you should upgrade is 'whirl'. The second in my opinion is 'bash'. Interested to hear what others are doing with their barb. I am L22.
