Hobchild: Well that's another thing really, instead of backtracking on the whole thing they could've just added an offline mode that would have at least quietened the masses and they wouldn't have looked so weak.

I also have to wonder if this will affect any third party exclusives that Xbox might have arranged. I can't imagine Capcom was tickled pink to hear the news and was probably originally a factor in Dead Rising 3 being exclusive.

It's like they relented, and then had a little sulk. Feels a little like "fine we will give you your way, but we are taking something else too".

If the benefits of the vision that Microsoft that tried to sell were indeed as great as what they claim, then they wouldn't have relented and done this u-turn. Now it seems like that it would be just be a lower spec PS4, and the main differences between the two would only be on pricing and exclusive games.

Well perhaps they learned from Windows 8 where people screamed at them that it wasn't the product they wanted (During beta), and in the end it's good parts were well overshadowed by it's bad parts and then they had to spend money fixing it so that people wanted it. MS need to introduce it's changes in a more subtle longer cycle. The whole always on thing was just silly anyway, what possible good reason could they have for REQUIRING a daily check in?

They could have their cake and eat it to, but they seem to have thrown the baby out with the bath water. perhaps they will have another think about it.

billgates: Not happy. I don't want to be dragged down with people who still wish to live in the 1990's.

Great read below.

I think it just got a whole lot better.   I would still like to see them remove the need for keeping the CD in the drive when playing offline.  Personally, if the game is installed on the machine and registered, there is no reason to put the CD in unless the game is re-installed.

I think one of the issues is that the [new] generation of gamers (I think they call it the 'now generation') only appear to me to focus on what works for them based on their world-view, so things like online-stores and online gaming work nicely because that is all they really know.   However, for the other 6.5billion odd people on the planet, the world-model is a lot different; they don't live in the states, they likely speak a different language and probably have to pay for their internet or share it with others.  I would say that a good marketing company embraces and builds relationships with the whole market, not just the little piece of demographic that they perceive works for them.

I would like to see the option. Be able to play without the disk in but have a check every so often or don't check of if check fails you have to insert the disk.

There is already an online check for downloaded games or dlc. I could not play fable 2 on my 2nd Xbox without being online.

I have more problem with needing the kinect than I do with being online. How my tv is setup there is no tidy place to put a kinect. And if you want to move your Xbox there is more things to move

The problem with that being that one could install a bunch of games, sell them and as long as they stay offline Microsoft would be none the wiser.

So MS gave the publishers what they wanted but the publishers didn't have the bottle to rally around MS when needed! MS must be pissed with them.
Now I'd like to hear how much of a difference the new Xbox controller trigger rumble makes, seems a lot more interesting than a swipe pad!

networkn: Wow MS Actually listened. Good for them.

Too late for me. I have an original Xbox and an Xbox360 with Kinnect. But they have lost my trust on this one, so I will be sitting tight for at least a year after release, to see how things pan out before I even consider purchase. I don't trust them not to gradually sneak in via the back door that which they couldn't overtly get through the front door.

Plus, if Microsoft really had changed its spots and was listening to what customers wanted (as opposed to backing down under duress with gritted teeth as in this case), then they would have done something about the god-awful interface for Windows 8. And no, Slugger, the Windows 8.1 kludge doesn't really do that.

If I have to get a console in the meantime it will be a PS4 as Sony (this time) seems actually customer friendly. And, given that for the past 10 years they have pretty much been the customer-hating vermin of the consumer electronics industry, that's a startling thing to discover! (cough, rootkit, cough). For the first time in 10+ years, I am actually prepared to contemplate buying Sony.

They could have had it both ways for online and offline gamers.

Eliminate the need for bluray/dvd check for online gamers and enabling it for offline.

Too simple a fix perhaps? ;)
