If anyone is too cheap to spend $1, there's a free 14 day trial for Microsoft Game Pass when you sign up for an IGN account.

"This Game Pass offers unlimited access to over 100 high-quality PC games for a 14 Day Trial. This is a limited time offer while supplies last. Codes are given out on a first come, first served basis, and the Giveaway will expire when all promotional codes are claimed."

There are 67,000 codes available.

Edit* may have expired already.

If you purchase Xbox live gold and then get gamepass ultimate whatevers left to run upgrades for free.

Hmm, that's essentially what I did to get 6 months (I think) for like $40 or something (for xbox GP, PC GP and xbox live gold) but are you sure it still works?

According to their faq it's still a 1:1 conversion when you sign up:

I'm happy with it. The last few months I haven't played much on it but I have completed a few games and enjoyed others. As with anything like this if you use it rarely, it's not worth it but if you play 1-2 triple A games a year then it pays for itself.

Good and bad news today.

good news is for game pass ultimate users Microsoft are adding EA play games to game pass on both pc and console.

Bad news is the beta on PC is over and the price is doubling soon.

Good to know. Still really good value IMO.  The article sums it up pretty well:

theverge:

A price increase for any subscription service is never fun, but even at $9.99 a month, Xbox Game Pass for PC still offers a lot of bang for your buck. The service includes access to any game developed by Microsoft for free the day it’s released, plus a slew of third-party games from publishers such as Bethesda, Sega, and Deep Silver, and you can step out of your comfort zone and try games you’d likely never buy previously.

Double the price? Bummer. I don't use mine enough to really justify that price but maybe a move to Ultimate if I get a new XBox this chrissy.

Really glad I just renewed mine for another 3 years then! I can confirm that it allowed me to add 36 months of xbox live gold and then convert that to ultimate (again).

It's only the pc one going up, the cheap price was while they beta tested it. Guessing it's coming out of beta next week when xcloud launches. Still if you get cheap gold stacked up and upgrade to gold you can get ultimate for a good price.

Hi there. Can you explain to me what this is? I currently have XBox gamepass on PC but will likely get an XBox Series X or S too so can I take advantage of this and if so, how? I assume I can do this even if I'm still subbed to PC Gamepass because that isn't lapsing yet.

Thanks

As one of the others mentioned earlier in the thread, if you purchase xbox live gold 12 month subscriptions, you can add up to three to your account at a time for a total of 36 months. Then if you sign up for game pass ultimate it will charge either $1 or $19.95 (one month charge) to convert the remaining 36 months of the live subscription to game pass ultimate. The advantage to ultimate is it gives you access to both console and pc games and EA Play is being added shortly. You can get reasonably cheap 12 month xbox live gold subscriptions if your willing to search around a bit and jump through a couple of VPN hoops to redeem them.

OK thanks, I just didn't want to do the wrong thing and end up paying a tonne for Gold only :). I'll have a look around and see what I can find.

Does anyone suspect this will continue or should I get in now, before I even have an xbox?

Gamepass is making it really hard to come up with a good reason to keep buying games at launch at full price. In a good way.

Would anyone happen to know if this would still work now after this price increase thing ?

Edit - It would have to be Ultimate ? You have to add the gold subscriptions and After that join Ultimate, in that order ?

I expect it to work after the GamePass price increase. I did mine yesterday, likely just before the increase but it worked - with a caveat that no one had mentioned before.

I had no XBox Live Gold

I went to CDKeys and bought a 12 month Brazilian sub (People had said they are cheap, they were, about NZ$55)

Went to the Microsoft (NZ) site to redeem a card.

As a test, went to redeem, failed (I expected this due to region)

Turned on VPN, set to brazil, redeemed again - success.

I then got another 12 months sub and did the same. Each sub, I said yes to recurring billing and got 13 months, then turned off recurring billing before doing next sub.

So after this, I had 26 months of Gold.

Then this is when it got weird

I bought a 6 month Brazillian sub (I had 3 months GamePass etc so 12 month wouldn't work) but CDKeys wouldn't give me the key, it kept saying "Under Review". Talking to the customer services rep they said it could be because of bank or bad region. They said they had refunded my money automatically and he could see I was in a different region. When I said to them that I had bought 2 others just before with Brazillian region they said "That was a system error, it shouldn't have let you". I said, thanks and moved on.

However, I searched on the site and found there were actually worldwide keys. I asked another rep if they really were worldwide, they said yes, so I bought a 6 month one and it worked. It was only about $4 more expensive than the Brazillian one.

So after redeeming that (+extra month for recurring = 7 months), plus the 3 months PC Gamepass I had remaining I was right on 36 months.

Did the $1 upgrade and it's all good.

All up it cost me about $161.

Thanks for all that info. Was just having a look in CDKeys and the one thats comes up for me is NZ$87.89. Where do you see the one that you said is about $59 ? I have 14 variations for 12 months showing up on CDKeys.
