Actually, you're not.

You're comparing the price of (apple + shipping) at nzgameshop with the cost of (apple + shipping + GST + Comsumer Guarantees Act) at Mighty Ape.

NZ based retailers have a LOT more compliance costs compared to international retailers. In return for paying higher prices, kiwis get some of the strongest consumer rights in the world. (I'm not saying that this is "right", just telling it how it is...)

It's entirely at an individuals discretion to purchase offshore and get a cheap deal if they're not worried about getting the occasional faulty/defective product... but its completely unreasonable to expect a local retailer to match that price.

Actually the second price was from EB Games Australia which includes their GST and I imagine they probably have a pretty good CGA. Other games do not have such a significant price difference sometimes the Aussies even pay a little more once you convert. If EB Games Oz delivered to NZ I would totally buy that one. NZgameshop unfortunately doesn't have it. If Mighty Ape didn't have this as an exclusive the price would be very different, IMO of course.

its funny you list the Consumer guarantees act included in that price... when we all know retailers pretend it doesn't exist when something breaks down out of warranty

Amen to that. TBH though Mighty Ape do have excellent customer service, I've never had to return anything but once during one of their marathon sales I bought a number of things but wasn't adding them to the same order so I was being charged a shipping fee for every item. Completely my fault but I emailed them and they got back to me within 15 minutes with an adjusted order plus I also noticed during their next marathon sale when I ordered my second item a very noticeable pop up came up asking if I wanted to add the item to my current order.

True. But Aus GST is 33% less than NZ GST...

...and regardless, the retailer doesn't have to pay it if the goods are exported.

But that's all superficial. The key point is that you can't expect retailers to sell at identical prices in vastly different markets. That's Economics101

Not identical no but similar yes. This is Australia and this is a game. Other games between us and Oz are a lot closer sometimes we even pay less. But anyway I feel we have gone off topic enough, lets just agree to disagree and let it be.

it's dropped in price at jb hifi and the warehouse. $88 at both.

Well MightyApe, this is the first and last time I will order from you. When I called up to enquire about them possibly dropping the price given what JB were doing, and more importantly the free poster, she questioned why they would do that on an order that has already paid. This is despite them telling me previously that I could cancel the order until the day before the game was ready to go.

Apparently the only way around it would be for them to send it to me, then for me to send it back to them. Given I wouldn't get a refund on the shipping, and it sounds like the shipping back is at my own expense, I can't be bothered cancelling it.

Not impressed. Will stick to brick and mortar stores in future. At least they can't hide behind a phone.

Reading the T's and C's on their site. the shipping back would be at my expense and they offer store credit only.

If I could be bothered I would simply dispute the charge with my credit card company and pre order at JB Hi Fi...

I buy most launch games from the Warehouse, for any reasonably high profile game they are nearly always the cheapest and they're starting to take gaming a bit more seriously from a sales/marketing point of view. For games that have been out a while I order from nzgameshop as they are normally $20-30 cheaper.

Have you ever pre ordered anything through them? How was it? They do seem to now be a viable alternative, and having an on-line store is another good improvement for them, but I have heard no feedback (good or bad) on pre orders through them. I like knowing that I will get the game on launch day :)

For high profile stuff like GTA you can preorder in store for $20 and you get a card that you bring in on release day. They've always had stock even when I haven't preordered but I've only ever bought in store so can't comment on the online side of things. I've preordered my PS4 from them online so will let you know how that goes :)

That's good to hear. For new releases I prefer in store too.

Sorry if I have misinterpreted what you have said but by pre-ordering with Mighty Ape haven't you agreed to a contract at that price? I'm not defending Mighty Ape or criticising you just trying to look at it from both angles. Did you pre-order because you were worried you would miss out and desperately wanted GTA on the first day? Because then I guess Mighty Ape are saying that was the risk you took. But then how does their price match work because under their Pre Order page it says "If you pre-order an item and the price drops before the release date, you’ll pay the cheaper price."

Can't you just cancel your order like you said and go to JB HiFi? It's still a few days before release. Maybe try calling again and speaking to someone else? I have always found their service pretty good.

All said and done, they should drop the price for you in the interest of good customer service and their core values :-P

The "if the price drops you pay the lower price" only applies if their price drops not price match. You can get it price matched up until they charge your credit card I believe. From what I've read it seems that mightyape charged for everyone's pre orders earlier this week. That's probably why they wouldn't price match.
