Small update released for PS5 overnight. Sony not saying specifically what it does - usual ‘system and stability improvements’-type comment:

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
There are a lot of unhappy punters with headset issues, especially those with high end sets like the Astro A50's and Steel Series 7-9 series. Apparently, the sound is terrible.
Both companies said they were fully compatible with next gen but Sony has locked out surround sound unless you buy a Sony Product which is terrible by them. Means a lot of people who had high performing headsets before will need to buy new ones. :(
I own both sets and whilst I am not happy, I am going to wait and see what happens in the next 6 weeks.
Looks like owners have approached Lawyers in the USA about a potential class action.

Interesting. I have a PlayStation Gold 5.1 headset. I've not tried them with my PS5 yet. The performance on them on the PS4 was a little underwhelming, TBH. They're quite prone to the audio cutting out when using the wireless adapter.
It was a massively stupid decision by both Sony and MS to remove the optical port. With those left in, none of these issues would have been present.
I am also quite pissed with Sony, for locking the USB to only allow surround over their own first-party Sony products. Sony make a tiny percentage of the worlds headsets, do they think everyone is going to throw their $300 headsets in the bin and buy Sony ones instead.
I can see a legal remedy being sought over this, to my mind, artificially limiting a product like that is particularly scummy.

Can someone please explain this to me? Are these 5.1 headphones that plugs in via USB?
Does this mean that USB headphones don't work with the PS5 unless it's a Sony branded one?
Surely this comes down to the drivers?

A lot of the flagship headsets connect via optical to give the best sound quality and surround. MS and Sony removed it allowing only USB as an option to connect.
Sony allow you to play stereo sound over USB, but if you want surround over USB, then you must use a Sony first party (Sony branded) Headset.
This means, people like me, with the Astro A50's which have surround sound, can't use them fully with the PS5.
Lots and lots of people are saying the sound out of the USB even in stereo, is muted and muddy.
Steel Series and Astro Gaming both made statements their flagship products would be fully compatible with Series X and PS5 and it seems they will not be.
For me it's not a super immediate issue, as I primarily console with my 5.2.2 Speaker System, but come xmas when I am away for some weeks and would usually take my console, a headset is essential. I will be very unhappy if it's not fixed by then.
Sony have also scummily, locked the NVME Port on the motherboard so only Sony whitelisted products will work. You can plug in a NVMe Drive and it won't work.

Can't you use the surround that comes out of your TV/AMP?
Sorry, I've been out of the console world for a while. Last console was a PS3

Things not working fully just smells of the product not being ready but forced out the door. I'm keen as hell for a PS5 and will get one (in 2021 when I can get one in a store...maybe) but it all just seems a bit premature at this point. Headsets seems strange, but the NVMe drives being locked out currently seems unsuprising. Given the huge song and dance about their storage, they'd want to ensure whatever is put in is going to keep up. I have a suspicion the additional drive will just add to the overall pool of the storage and not be seperate so it needs to be seemless.
spoonynz: Hey guys,
Anyone have any insight on when the accessories will arrive like the headset etc... faintly remember someone saying the shipment was delayed?
So how likely is it that stock of the PS5 will flow into the country before my new job's enforced three-week close down over xmas? I love my kids but will need something to do while they sleep off their grandparent induced sugar highs.

PsychoSmiley:
If you don't have a order already you can join me waiting until some time in Q1 2021.
Yeah I guess I figured as much, thanks. Guess i'll just have to spend more time actually talking to my in-laws. *sigh*
sonic1989: anyone playing demons souls? any tips 😅
I've taken a break from it, playing until dawn atm😪
Just completed my first run through! Pleased as I failed to complete the original PS3 release and gave up quite early on...
I now have that and Dark Souls 3 under my belt. Working on Bloodborne @ 60fps now.
Tips?
