so one of the 'random events' (not strangers and freaks) was a chick next to a car crash who needed to be taken to a safehouse, but I got a wanted level as soon as I picked her up (not sure if that was part of the thing or just coincidence that I hit a ped). Unfortunately by the time I lost the cops, she died so I couldn't get her to the safehouse.

Any idea if this means I can't get 100%, or do those random events not count towards completion?

stevenz: Anyone else think that the torture scene was a bit "too much", or am I just getting soft in my old age?

Not at all, i thought it was great.  It's satire.

No idea if they count towards 100%, but I've failed a random event (standing round for too long listening to NPCs talk, and then they all decided to shoot me at once).    A while later I passed the same location and was able to run the event again.

Not sure if you can do it again, I imagine you would though and this is one random event you want to finish. I don't think I got chased by the cops but I could understand why if they did. If you do get to do it again do it fast and get out of the area before the cops arrive.

There is like 56 of the random events and you just have to complete 14 to get 100% so you should be fine even if it doesn't pop up again. Go to your social club profile and check your progress with the checklist page.

The bit on the torture scene that got me the most was the pliers. The most gory bit to me was when devin's lawyer died.

From what I read, if you fail a random encounter you can come back and do it again later, or all bar-one the one in the construction site in the middle of LS.

The entire game is satire.

I understand that's the intent, but;

sat·ire

1.the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

2.a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision,or ridicule.

3.a literary genre comprising such compositions.

I don't see how the torture scene was any more satirical than a similar scene from a dramatic movie. Apparently I missed the ironic or ridiculous parts of that particular scene. Maybe I need to force myself to play it again to see the funny side? Is the famous tooth-pulling torture scene from "Marathon Man" therefore satire? Or is it all context?

Rather than "It just is!" - I honestly fail to see how that scene was satire other than in the dialogue after the fact where (after obviously enjoying it) Trevor then goes on to explain how pointless torture is as method for gathering information (which I believe is in fact the case in reality).

The satire is of the US government attitude towards torture, and in this case is highlighted with the "It's Legal" .. ah.. objective?  .. for the waterboarding.  It takes the 'where does it end'  and puts it on the screen, making the player see it in an unavoidable way.

Then Trevor and a later news report explain how pointless the whole exercise was.

Fair enough. The issue I had was that you're still torturing a dude. I'm not convinced that it being portrayed as satire makes it any the less unpleasant.

what I find weird is the people who find a torture scene unpleasant,  yet are quite happy to play the rest of the game where you murder hundreds, if not thousands of innocent people, deal drugs, and rob banks.

(not that I find any of those things unpleasant, but I wonder why people who dislike torture seem to be 'ok' with them)

I don't intentionally kill "innocents" in the game. I have no problem with drug dealing, just the people that tend to be involved in it. Banks are insured faceless corporations. I play it for the story and to do dumb stuff in vehicles. There's a line between killing someone outright and prolonged infliction of physical & mental pain.

I should stop here, I'm starting to sound like a hippy...

You don't need to complete all of the random events to get 100%, just most of them. Some of the events have very vague conclusions, particularly the hitchhiker type ones.

The only way she won't die is if you pick her up in a reasonably quick vehicle and manage to get to the destination pretty much with zero detour. Odd that you got wanted stars though as I've done the mission twice and got no stars either time, maybe a cop was passing by just at the right/wrong time?
