Senecio:
The only answer to this question is, it depends. If you’re a heavy gamer and play through a title quickly and want to trade it while it still holds value. Then get the disc edition. Digital would have been fine for me. I’m casual gamer and being able to fire up a game from the SSD as and when the inspiration takes me far outweighs the savings I would make by buying physical disks.
I suppose I would be described as a heavy gamer. I don’t play through games quickly and I usually wring every last little bit of play out of them to get to, or near, 100% completion. For example, I have put well over 200 hours each into some of the more recent Assassins Creed games. However I don’t often go OCD on trophies.
I have a disc version PS5 and mostly buy physical discs - usually new releases but sometimes older and secondhand. Once I have finished a game I will almost always sell it - not really interested in holding onto a library. Generally I can recoup about 50% of what I pay for a game.
AAA games are expensive and, as you say, having a disc PS5 means I can buy a much cheaper (than digital) physical version of a new release and sell it within a few months to get a good chunk of the price back. This about halves my ongoing gaming cost and I reckon the premium for the disc-version PS5 has been repaid several times over.
Being retired I do have the time for all this and it’s all part of the fun for me.

I bought the disc edition in the end. Really enjoying Hogwarts Legacy, then will decide whats next.

We have been overseas for three months and get home this weekend. I’ve missed my PS5 and one of my first things to do will be to shoot over to JB HiFi and pick up a copy of HL. I understand it’s very good.

HL is fun. I am playing on the basic, story level, enough of a challenge for now. I miss West Sussex.

@YvonneW Yep - the South Downs, ten minutes walk from here, are just beautiful. Villages like Steyning, Alfriston and Ditchling are stunningly pretty - and there’s dozens more like that. We’re on our way back to NZ and will miss all this too.
Sorry for the OT.

The fifth game (and latest) in the GRID (Codemasters/EA) arcade racing game series; GRID LEGENDS (2022) will be free to download as part of the Playstation Plus Essentials free games bundle, available to download from May 2nd.
The other two games are:-
CHIVALRY II (2021), which is a hack-and-slash multiplayer title in which players are knights swinging swords at one another in the times when armed warfare was brutal, bloody, and very personal.
DESCENDERS (2018), involves mountain bikes pounding down procedurally generated slopes. Players unlock new talents, perks, and bikes as they chase one another in this racing rogue-lite.

PS5 update coming that will support Dolby Atmos and adds storage enhancements:

lookout: Well, I’m regretting getting the digital only PS5.
New release games on digital are so expensive - between $119-139. Disc games seem to go on sale much quicker and can be picked up secondhand.
For example, Jedi Survivor is $119 on the PS Store but can be had for $74 on disc or even cheaper secondhand.
Spider-Man 2 will be $139 digital. I can guarantee that within a couple of weeks of release there will be secondhand disc copies for much cheaper.
Plus, you can sell your disc copy when you’ve completed the game.
I might look at selling my digital console and paying the extra for the disc version. Maybe even that cool Spider-Man one.
Anywho, I guess this is just a cautionary tale for anyone looking at getting a PS5!
Yep. I have been preaching this exact message in favour of the disc edition, in several posts here on GZ over the past couple of years.

Disc was always the plan for me. My play rate is slow, and I stalk sales so I pick up things for $5-$20 here and there. Not AAA stuff but things to keep my occupied.
Rumours of a PS5 Pro on its way. No more detail than that, but I would be pretty pissed if they release a new console before getting the value from the PS5. It wasn't even available to buy for 2.5 years. Now people are facing it being the lower spec machine, only a year or two into its ownership. And on top of that, games aren't populating the store any faster. It's still a while away before games come out that are taking advantage of the hardware and software.
I'll buy it though.
