It's not the most profitable entertainment industry for no reason. Yeah, the costs are hugely frustrating, but I don't see it getting any cheaper. Especially if Disney does end up acquiring some game studios and barging themselves into the industry.

EviLClouD: I see the PS5 is on sale for $718 at the moment. Is it worth holding out for the Slim or Pro versions?
@EvilClouD Just saw this re new slim version of PS5 being released in the US sometime next month. Less bulky (30% lower volume and 24% lighter) - no change in performance specs but slightly larger 1TB internal storage.
"This new PS5 has an optional snap-on Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, meaning you could choose to upgrade a new digital model with disc function later on."
Old model will disappear once stock is sold - maybe a chance to get an old model cheap on run-out?
Hopefully, they will post pictures of them side by side to compare. The latest gen consoles are wildly inconvenient form factors, esp for travelling.
The Xbox S is so much better, but not as powerful.
Yeah I wondered why they didn't show it next to the large one, but thankfully The Verge popped the dimensions into comparesizes.com and came up with this (source: https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/10/23911388/new-ps5-model-slim-size-comparison)

It'd be nice to see the real things next to each other though, but I guess visually perhaps it doesn't look that impressive so they didn't do that.

Assuming this is to scale, which I imagine it is since they'll be wanting to demonstrate the size reduction without being critical of their current SKU, then it's a marked decrease...

Rumours of a PS5 Pro on its way. No more detail than that, but I would be pretty pissed if they release a new console before getting the value from the PS5. It wasn't even available to buy for 2.5 years. Now people are facing it being the lower spec machine, only a year or two into its ownership. And on top of that, games aren't populating the store any faster. It's still a while away before games come out that are taking advantage of the hardware and software.
I'll buy it though.
Looks like the rumours about a new PS5 were about the Slim rather than a Pro. Hard to imagine they will bring out a Pro anytime soon, now that they have released the Slim.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

There were some mentions in the documents they inadvertently publicised. But I feel that was more recent than the first times I was hearing the PS Pro talk.
Plenty of rumours of a PS5 Pro with November 2024 currently suggested.
Whether you believe them or not is up to you.
But both the current PS5 and Xbox Series X will need a performance bump if they are going to do 4K 120fps properly without compromises. (Don't think 8K gaming is going to be a thing any time soon).
BTW: The recent massive Xbox leak suggested more of a slimmed down digital only Series X rather than a Pro version. So more of a One-S type refresh than the full One-X mid gen upgrade from the last cycle.
Personally, at this point in time I think the Switch 2 (Super Nintendo Switch 😀) is potentially way more exciting than either a Pro PS5 or Xbox.

Here's a PS5 Pro rumour/leak recently reported on Tom's Guide.

An interesting little quirk of the PS5 Slim has been reported on Tom's Guide.
It appears that the PS5 Slim with a disc drive will initially require an internet connection to set up. By comparison the original PS5 model, released in November 2020, can play disc-based games right out of the box without involving the internet.

I read that Alan Wake 2 was released digital only, with no retail disc alternative. I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes the standard before long.
The last thing the game makers want is for you to be able to on-sell a game, that means they're missing out on a sale.
I'm looking to get a PS5 for the kids for xmas this year - was originally figuring a slim would be a good value offering, but putting aside the fact they won't be available in NZ for xmas, they don't appear to be the no-brainer that previous slims offered.
I think I want a disc drive anyway to let the kids enjoy some second-hand titles and maybe even some PS4 stuff, and the size etc doesn't appear that different.
This slim feels like one that makes life a little easier for manufacturing/distibution margins, rather than a step change for consumers.
So it looks like I'll be on the hunt for a deal on a PS5 Disc Classic bundle before xmas - maybe black Friday? :-)
