The 12GB PS3 does not include the hard drive bracket required for installing a sata hdd.  You will have search online for where you can buy one.

I've got a bracket I got last week off trade me just wanting to know if I plugged it in the ps3 would it work or does data from the 12gb need to be transferred to my 250gb hard drive?

When you put it in the PS3 and boot it up the PS3 will detect it and copy over all the data, it'll take a wee while though.

yes it works fine.  I bought one of the 12GB ones when they came out and put my old laptop hard drive and worked well.
