Since I have both controllers, I have carried out some very unscientific testing for you - walking around the house with one controller in each hand. They seem to pretty much have the same range. Both seem to cut out at the same time, when walking through a doorway to the next room etc. Unfortunately, I don't think the new controller is the solution to your issue, but YMMV.
Microsoft do claim that the new controller has "up to twice the wireless range of previous controllers". But, the fine print says "range compared to previous controllers, using the Xbox One S console". Just speculating, but maybe there is a larger antenna in the Xbox One S itself that allows for the longer range?
Here's a couple of range tests on YouTube:

Ive found the xbox to be very directional for its controler reception. Had it off to the side of the TV by about 3-4m in the big room and I was about 3m infront of the tv, and it was unreliable as hell, aimed it in towards where the chairs were and it came right.
I use to use my xbox one controller with xbox one about 7 metres away from the xbox through 2 walls (had xbox running throughout the house via hdmi). it was pretty good, but would disconnect at times. Using the same controller on a PC with the windows 10 adapter at same location (xbox, ps4, steam machine all in a wardrobe), I had no issues with. The worst was the PS4 controller though on the PS4.
