So looking to entertain young people during lockdown. When I was a kid two player games were common. Are there any good child friendly PC based games for kids under 10? (who can play each other with two controllers)?

Was thinking FIFA but what else is good?

Very generic question. I'm not a gamer myself.

Does it need to be offline and on the same device?

There are plenty of online game sites where kids can play against each other and their mates either in public or in a private arena... our mr 8 and mr 10 like www.crazygames.com  but you need a Separate device per player..

Ideally offline, single machine.

Don't Starve Together is a neat multiplayer game suitable for kids young & old. I know definitely on PS4 it's split-screen two-player which saves the need for multiple setups.

I think the PC version (on Steam) doesn't support split-screen play, but I could be wrong.

My kids have been playing Rayman Legends thus far this lockdown, which is a great cartoony co-op platformer.

There are lots of online options for multiplayer games on PC - eg Minecraft, most FPS, Roblox, Pico park etc. but these are almost exclusively one player per PC ( no split screen mode). If you do have multiple devices available there some (eg Minecraft) can use local network to connect rather than the internet.

One exception I’ve seen recently is Tricky Towers - a fun casual game. Does require at least one controller for local multiplayer ( and one person using keyboard)

For whatever reason, local multiplayer ( ie split screen play) seems to be mostly limited to console games ( eg Xbox, PS5, Switch)

lego games are good and go on discount quite a bit.  You don't really "die" you just lose tokens you have collected.
They are not versus/competitive games but more working together, some of the games have things like pulling different levers together.
Levels can be revisited and encourage 100% completion by collecting bricks to be awarded lego models and different characters.

Bonus with these games is that if one kid is playing a second player (parent) can join anytime to help solve a puzzle

I'd agree with this. The Lego games are really good and are generally available on most platforms. When my kids were significantly younger, they played a number of them, from Harry Potter ones to Marvel-themed ones and all sorts in between.

  • Lego - pick your poison when it comes to the theme
  • Unravel Two
  • Putt Putt - Though a single player game it can be used via collabortation using single input. Very casual point and click puzzle solver from the mid 90s. Maybe it's the nostalgia kicking in.

Minecraft dungeons my 6 year old loves, we play together.. can have up to 4 players playing at once [if you want to have a jam with them too :)].. its an action role play and you can level up your players, collect different items etc. progressively gets harder as you level up.

Quite fun :)

Oh, crash team racing is also quite fun, only game the wife will play with us too :)

We've actually gotten a whole load of fun out of our XBox 360 coming out of retirement with its Kinect controller.

We've been playing Ten Pin Bowling, Boxing, Olympics and others.

It can make for a really fun afternoon with the kids (even though ours are 14 & 16, they still enjoy it as much as they did when they were half that age).

Same here. The Kinect sensor sitting on top of a Sony X90J looks really out of place, but who cares - I forgot just how much fun is Kinect Sports!
