Strange problem. On boot-up my XP-pro notebook seems to take forever to find and connect to my simple 2 PC home LAN. I have to go to control panel--network connections and then wait almost a minute (machine almost 'hangs') to finally get the little lan connected icon and the network to come up.
Both machines are running XP, I have them plugged into a 4 port router which deals with dhcp. I do have sql express on one machine that the other has to talk too, not sure if this is causing the problem 'tho. Both machines are fairly high-spec with plenty of ram.

Any ideas?

Have you tried Static IP addresses for both PCs as an alternative to DHCP-assigned addresses?

That may speed things up a bit.

I might have a go with connecting the 2 pc's directly with just an ethernet cable. These 2 machines are mediaportal client/server. I've had some fun and games getting the client to recognise the server for watching TV, Solved it (after much forum browsing) by putting the IP addie of the server machine into the config rather than the actual name.

Static IP addresses is probably the best way to go on such a small network, but also check to see if there are newer drivers available for your network card.

Figured out the problem, mediaportal was starting on windows boot and was trying to find the sql server ip before the network was up properly, causing choking noises.
