arnies:

For a Gigabit connection what would you recommend out of these three Ubiquiti routers?:

- Edgerouter X - Seems to be able to route at Gigabit nowadays, but only in one direction at a time? Cheapest option

- Edgerouter Lite - Seems like the pro choice if you're ok with CLI setup etc.

- USG - The most expensive, provides pretty pictures but you'll lose a bit because you won't be able to do packet inspection at gigabit speeds

I have used all of these, but currently run an EdgeRouter 4 on a gigabit HFC cable connection.

All are excellent - but avoid the ERX for speed reasons (although perfectly OK with 200/20 cable)

I suggest the ER Lite. (just sold mine, but only because I got the ER4)

@arnies All Edgerouters have full DPI offloading. If you're getting other UniFi kit then you're better to grab the USG.

Spot the difference - both routers wired to the same (Wellington) gigabit cable connection on the same day ...

The Edgerouter X has hardware offloading and I've seen these to be perfectly capable on Gigabit connections - did you ensure "hwnat" was enabled?

I don't still have the ER-X, but I do still have its (2016-vintage) setup notes, quoting verbatim from your "Ubiquiti Edgerouter Tutorial":

You'll note that doing a Speedtest you'll get really really poor speeds like this:

You can see this in the console if you type "show ubnt offload".

The reason is the wizards don't enable offloading by default.

Open up the Console (top right), login with the same user you use for the WebUI and type these direct into the terminal:

set system
set system offload ipv4 vlan enable
set system offload ipv4 pppoe enable
commit
save
exit

@Sideface Ahh right. I didn't have an Edgerouter X back then either so couldn't really test. But have confirmed since it is OK for Gigabit connections. As you say though, it is better to get either the Lite or the ER-4 for such connections though.

For the Edgerouter X the commands are a little different:

configure
set system offload hwnat enable
set system offload ipsec enable
commit
save

One management panel for your whole network + ease of management on top of things. It just works.

Like I've said multiple times on here - USG + UniFi Switch + UniFi Access Points = 1 "unified" network controlled from a single control panel.

is the edgerouter X able to do the following two?

1.enable to have 80% of gigabyte connection

2. never worry about it in the cupboard once setup.

I would like to find out whether the advantage is sinificant when going up to ER4 from ERX? would ERX be a better option for me?

My home network have 5 devices at all time, and with 3-4 guesses max occasionally.

I am 2/3 saved up for a edgerouter 4,while having the ERL on replaced USB stick.

But realised my ERL kicked the bucket again yesterday, hence this decision/discussion need to be brought forward.

@iamsammajor Just grab a new flash drive for your Edgerouter Lite and flash it. Really simple to repair, you don't at all need to replace the router as the Edgerouter Lite is a very capable device.

Before anything - backup the configuration from your Edgerouter.

1) Grab Etcher - https://etcher.io
2) Grab the following firmware bundle - https://files.murfy.nz/ER-e100.v1.10.9.5166937.img.tar.gz
3) Untar - 7zip can do this until you get a .img file.
4) Insert your USB stick in your computer, load this file into Etcher and "etch" it to the USB drive.
5) Pop the flash drive in the router - you're done. It is a brand new router from this point. Restore your configuration and it'll route packets as per normal.

Flash drive I use for Edgerouters as it fits without any modification - very overkill size wise (considering you only need 2gb), but works well: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MEMSAM61132/Samsung-32GB-Metallic-Bar-USB-31-DriveChampagne-Si - you can extend the ext3 partition on the flash drive using a tool like gparted on Linux to fill up the flash drive if you like, however not really required.

I've just made that flash drive image to repair a flash drive in an Edgerouter tonight. It works, and I've done a number of these in the past which are still working to this day.

It looks like you are getting sorted elsewhere, but for the record - gigabit is covered above. I have one on a 100/20 connection and it has been rock solid (uptime > 1 year) since I have had it (nearly 2 years). Also if you get the SFP version for a little extra $ you have (passive) PoE out on a bunch of ports, so you can power another ER-X (and use as a switch) and some Unifi AC-Lites, which is what I am doing and makes my small network cabinet much tidier.

thanks for the heads up, my ERL kinda works in a way, so this might confirm the adapter is working. The ERL cannot be configured it any more as there is error 500 once login through web browser nor SSH.
