I am a bit of a DIY'er so everything I had to learn from here but its not too complicated once you get your head around things.
I got my cat5e cable from cabledirect and the rj45 keystones and dynamix patchpanel from PBTech. They seemed to be the best price/value.
Also find someone with a trade card as you will be surprised by the tradeprice for PDL wallplates, ADSL2+/VDSL master splitters, Gel joiners etc from places like mastertrade.
I have also put in RG6 for SKY/TV around the house and its best if you can do it at the same time.
I was lucky as I had under floor access. Might be a bit harder coming from the ceiling space to where you want to put the network points.
Thanks guys, I thought those faceplates sounded too good to be true. I'll look into the PDL ones. And yup, I'm thinking one of those 12 port wall mountable patch panels are probably the way to go for me. ANd I guess, should I need more ports in the future I can upgrade or even add another. In terms of ADSL master splitters, are there any that should be avoided? I've seen some on trademe and even a second hand one.
They all have to have a telepermit so they all should be of the same standard I would think. I got the VDSL2 one from MasterTrade as it was the same price as the ADSL2+ one and is backward compatible with ADSL2 so it was a bit of futureproofing for the same price.
You never know if they put a cabinet in your area and then you will be thankful that you have it if it supports VDSL2 :)
replacing my wiring in my house and putting in the master splitter I went from connection speeds of 10,000 Kbps and now I get between 15 - 17,000 Kbps. (I am only about 500meters from a FTTN cabinet)

Cable should be relatively easy to run, as I'm only going to run it where there there are phone lines, and where there is coax so hopefully I'll just pull it up/down easy enough. I'm going to have to price everything up, and see exactly what I can afford to do right now.

I hadn't heard of Electrical Direct before, but I'm just having a quick browse now, looks like it might be a goer for me, I'm still working out how I can try and open a trade account at one of these wholesalers haha.
I've just been looking at the PDL range and I could only find Cat 6 modules, this one, which also has a picture further down thepage saying Cat5e. Does it matter, are they interchangeable? I thought they wouldbe different.

thanks, it sticks out from the wall a bit (300mm deep) but the bonus is the top shelf where I can sit my modem, voip ata and little NAS box. I bought the dynamix cheapie wall plates and cat5e modules from cablesdirect. they have different pretty coloured modules. cat5e is fine for up to 1 gigabit ethernet.. no probs with using cat6 modules though.
Oh so you can use Cat 6 modules with Cat5e network ok? Anybody have a spare ADSL master splitter floating around they don't want? Another $50 on the budget for one isn't looking good. I don't think I need VDSL capabilities, Telecom have no plans to put a cabinet near me, all the surrounding areas yes, but to me, no. We're to close to the exchange apparently.
Sorry, the good wire in ones cost a bit because they are actually good.
My $2 shop has plug in ones for $3.90 - kinda says something about the quality of them if they are that cheap eh ;)
If you are going HPM for the plates you will have to go to a wholesaler to get the glossy plates, they only supply matt ones to bunnings etc. Loads of businesses have accounts with mastertrade or JA Russells etc even if they are not sparkys so ask around people you know, even at russels I cant pay straight away since the staff at the counter cant do the same discounts the account I can use gets so I have to sort the cousin out once the invoice has been done.

If you can get it for $100 then go for it, but those cabinets are all made in small volumes so the normal prices of them is rather excessive for what they are.
Also the RF stuff is of no use with the new sky requirements. I dont really see the worth in home running all your RG6 cables like most people do, perhaps in the days when sending a modulated RF signal was the done thing it made sense, but certainly not now that people want HD around the house.
The number of cat5s in that box is in no way future proof, it is suitable for light usage now like you are proposing, but not enough runs allowed for to do HD Over cat6 in it etc.
