Any suggestions on a small (read tiny) wireless router that supports VLAN tagging? Live in a small apartment so looking for something that doesn't take up space but equally doesn't need to have amazing coverage.

I had considered something like the TP Link TL-WR802N but I'm not sure this supports VLAN.

Mikrotik hAP AC2

Nothing special wireless performance wise, but full fledged RouterOS with all the good stuff that comes with that.

@antonknee how small, and what other specs do you need? If size is critical then https://mikrotik.com/product/RB931-2nD or https://mikrotik.com/product/RBmAPL-2nD but both only 2.4GHz dual chain wifi. If you can go a little larger or need 5GHz wifi, then as @chevrolux suggests https://mikrotik.com/product/hap_ac2

Idly considering a Ubiquiti Dream Machine.

A few questions -

- is it as good as everyone says it is ?

- is it worth the (not insignificant) price ?

- is it easy to use, but can do advanced stuff (I certainly can't do advanced stuff, but hopefully I can follow instructions) ?

- in the review on this very Geekzone, it says something about having to set up initially using your existing router, is this still necessary ?

- does it work with ANY fibre provider ? vlan vs no vlan / whatever ?

- can it do this NAT redirection / DNAT thing (if I need to, if I can follow / find instructions) ?

EDIT - also, I presume each wire plugged into the back can go to a switch and it will run these devices fine ? at the moment I have a wire plugged in the back of our existing router going to a switch behind the TV to connect about 4 devices there, another wire to a switch behind another TV, to connect about 4 devices there, another wire...

Also, is it possible to have wifi on these turn on and off on a schedule and / or for specific devices and / or have some kind of parental controls ?

@rb99 It'll be a good choice for you, does D-NAT etc but as your current ISP is just DHCP without VLAN or anything it'll take you around 5mins start to finish to setup no other router needed. My review was with earlier firmware and has since been rectified, I'll go and update it.

As a follow up, I bought a Dream Machine a few weeks ago. Don't know when I'll install it - you know... holidays, people at home etc.

Anyway, am now idly speculating (again)...if I buy an access point for it (and I may find the built in is sufficient for our two story), are there any (Ubiquiti) models recommended ? I've looked around, and if I do it seems to be between UAP-AC-PRO, UAP-AC-LITE and UAP-AC-LR.

PRO getting expensive, LITE is, well, LITE, so might go for the Long Range ? Again might not need it at all but if so does that sound good, is that the one to avoid, will we all need tin foil hats with its 250mW power ?

I presume a PoE thingy would also help ?

U6-Lite would be the go for home. Maybe a couple depending on size. I struggle to see a use case for anything bigger at home.
