Connection to the Chorus network will be done when you contact your Telco. In this case it needs to be lodged as a full new install with wiring. As this was not lodged as this nobody visited to do it.

Looking at the double power point at the bottom of the box, it appears that the earth connection to earth the metal cabinet could be wired directly into the power point. If it is, that's a no no. There should be a separate earth wire back to the 230 volt distribution box.

If that network cabinet has a metal door (can't tell from your pic), you can forget about any decent wifi performance in your house.

To me things don't look too bad, not that I am saying its right, but at least some of the way.

Best part is that it would appear that the flexi conduit has been run from the demarc to the inwall cabinet, currently carrying a cat5/6 run, so updating to fibre should hopefully not be too painful. I assume the inwall cabinet is directly above and behind the ETP.

As for the use of a phone pairing module in the cabinet, as others have said this needs to be replaced with a RJ45 data module or other patch panel, just hope there is spare cable inside the wall to let you re terminate.

Other than those comments I concure with the others, there is a serious lack of education in the domestic electrical trade around this type of stuff, it take very little more from the current setup to the correct setup, although I suspect there is probably not enough outlets, 4 is pretty low, but depends where they turn up

* The inwall cabinet is over the opposite side of the garage from where the outside cables are

* As to the number of outlets: I'll check again tonight, but I think there is one in every bedroom (4), one in the kitchen, one in the sitting area and one in the lounge... but that would mean there should be 7 wired connections?

* Yes, the door is metal. But would I locate the wifi router in here? Or elsewhere in the house?

* I thought there would be some kind of covered box thing at the outside where these cables would pass into the house? The ETP? Is this something the builder should have done?

* There definitely is a green wire coming out the back of the power points earthing to the cabinet

ETP is chorus' responsibility and as sbiddle advised you need to ask your ISP for a New Connection, and pay the fee for it. this is not up to the building company or their sub contractor, its up to you to organise and pay for as the home owner.

PhantomNVD: Just had a house built myself, due to change hands this week (but delayed-another rant!) and have just Recieved a quote for copper to cross a quiet residential road... $2500. If I was in your shoes I'd get a quote for install, but probably end up biding my time on a skinny $55/60gb plan awaiting the fibre... I WISH I was in your shoes!

The OP is this case looks to have the Chorus lead-in already in place. That's very different to you.

You didn't mention in your thread that it was a new build - that's very relevant to it. In the case of the OP the developer would have already paid Chorus to do this which is exactly what you need to do.
