@sdavisnz the problem is some router (such as the Edgerouter X) are reliant of the CPU doing all the heavy lifting with NAT while others have hardware NAT (a dedicated CPU to handle the heavy lifting).

You're looking at around 500Mbit with the Edgerouter X vs 1Gbit with the Edgerouter Lite for example with basic IPv4/v6 PPPoE NAT. Other cheaper routers may have a gigabit switch but are internally connected to the CPU at 100Mbit. It depends on the router, and it hard to judge on what a router can do without testing it out.

I'd like to make an observation, that I was not able to find a single technicolor suggested in the OP on trademe. I'd either clarify that it might be difficult to get, or remove the suggestion altogether. Or comment that going with spark can net you one depending on how you sign up.

I think we will start seeing the threads of "My Gigabit WiFi is so slow" pop up on Facebook or even Geekzone once these plans are released. I won't hold back on my comments, trust me. People need to learn. It would be good if an ISP like @BigPipeNZ (ping @JoshBigPipe) would post something explaining why you won't see Gigabit over WiFi otherwise honestly ISP's are going to get so many support tickets resolved with "Pebcak".

You've raised a good point here. It was available freely (for $1-10 on Trademe) when I made this guide however I feel they've been snatched up due to their bridging abilities + price, broadcom chipset etc. Really a good router if you're only needing a bridge. Looks like the DV130 is the only reliable VDSL bridge out there now, if only other ISP's (cough, Vodafone) would make their routers able to be bridged. I had about 5 of them at one stage but were all given away.

Absolutely, we are gonna see problem posts that are not really major problems with the gigabit launch. Most people wont use much more data than people with a 100mbit connection though. It will just be muppets complaining that their speed test is only 600mbit.

Yes Toughswitch is good for those IP Phones. There are lots o 8 port routers.. RB2011 is 10 ports.

Get an edgerouter lite + a toughswitch if you can afford it, it will be an awesome setup.

I think I've picked this up from comments in other threads, but is it right that the ERL will only do hardware NAT if your ethernet network is all on a single LAN port (i.e. via a switch)? You won't get hardware NAT on an ERL if you have two switches, one on each of the LAN ports?

I just meant none of the routers in the router guide are 8 ports. Query was also for an ADSL connection so ERL might be overkill!

Ah ok. yeh thought they were talking about 500/1000 Gigabit. My bad.

I ran/still run my ADSL/VDSL at home with a Dreytek DV120/DV130 respectively in bridge mode with an 10 port router. the RB2011. 1 port is used up by the connection to the modem in bridge mode but it has been super solid. So I was left with 4x gig ports and 5x100mbit ports left on the router.

But for ADSL/VDSL the HG659 is good too, same with the 630. I had terrible experiences with a fritzbox 7340.

If my mikrotik died after 8 months I would buy an edgerouter too. But my rb2011 is kicking butt. If your on a budget edgerouter x. If you can afford it edgerouter lite.

Yep. My mikrotik had built-in wireless. So I'm wondering what AP should I get for edgerouter.
