Ah, okay. I see what you are talking about. I get the same behavior.

Just after I pair my headset with my laptop, the headset "rings" as if a call is coming in. If I push the answer button, it connects to the computer.

Going into the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel (stay away from the volume control for the moment), under the Audio tab, I make sure that "Bluetooth Audio" is selected for Sound Playback and Sound Recording.

At that point, I can launch sndrec32.exe and record my voice and hear it play back in my ear.

In Windows Media Player, under Tools | Options, there is a Devices tab. Select "Speakers" and click Properties and make sure that the Bluetooth Audio device is selected in there. You may need to restart Windows Media Player to put the change in effect.

If you're using another program, see if there is a way to set the "Speaker" option to Bluetooth Audio.

Hi Mike,

After re-testing a couple of times, I got very variable behaviour... from nothing working to record only working to both working....?????

I do not know -rather than which parameters- which sequence of setting change brought me now to a "workable" configuration.

After 3 trials, I got a similar behavior as your... It seems now stable, if I initiate the connection from the headset (clicking the connect button on headset). Windows then get it connected and switch automatically the setting in the S&R control to bluetooth for Audio...

I think I can make a use of it like this... but still have a small issue that I guess is related to Windows : Whenever I connect the headset, the options in the Volume Tab under the S&R control become grayed (this is really odd.. no ???). In the gray area, the "Place volume icon in the task bar" get also automatically unchecked...

Indeed when I connect the bluetooth headset while my volume icon is in the task bar... I keep this icon in the task bar, until I open it (for instance by right click-and choosing "Adjust Audio Properties"), see the bluetoth device is selected automatically by default... then close it immediately (without doing anyting)... and see the icon disappearing automatically.

Do you have a similar behaviour ? Any idea why and how such a strange behaviour of the UI of the Volume Tab in S&R could be fixed ?

I did not checked the VOIP (callserve) tool yet (too early to call any of my friends :)... but I feel confident it should work as I get all sounds in the headsets, even the error beep from windows.

Alexis: I believe this is by-design. I haven't checked into it, but my guess is that BT devices control their own volume, so they don't expose a volume control to the OS.

I get the same behavior, and since my headset has a volume control, it doesn't bother me. I don't know if BT sound-streams have a an amplitude parameter that could be set on the desktop-side of the stream.

I hope this helps. I spent forever trying to get this to work and finally did. I'm by no means an expert and basically figured this out through trial and error. I typed out instructions the best i could remember, just in case I had to do it again. Thought it may help other out as well so I decided to post it here. I hope it works for anyone having the same problem.

HOW TO INSTALL DLINK DBT-120 WITH REVISION 4 IF IT SAYS "No valid security key found" and you get a red bluetooth symbol in the system tray.

1. If you are having trouble installing in WindowsXP with service pack 2, read this first:

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/dbt120_revB3/QIG/WinXP_servicepack2/dbt120_InstallationGuide_winxpsp2.pdf

2. DO NOT INSERT ADAPTER INTO USB DRIVE YET

3. You can obtain a new security key at
http://66.45.42.85/dlink/

Before you can obtain your new key a short form must be filled out. You will need to enter the MAC address of the DBT-120, referred to as BD (Bluetooth Device) Address, in order to obtain a new key. The MAC address is located on the adapter directly ABOVE the bar code next to MAC. The Mac address uses Hexidecimal characters meaning only 0-9 and A-F are valid.

3. a) You should get a confirmation page immediately that says:
"Thank you for using a Widcomm Bluetooth Solution.
Emailing your key to: xxxxx@yyyyy.com - Success
The email with your key should arrive within an hour.
Please save this information for your records.
Further requests for this key may only be sent to: xxxxx@yyyyy.com"

My security key was sent to my hotmail account and arrived almost instantly.

3.b) You will get an email from Module Security
The email with your key will say: "Thank you for your request. The module security key for your bluetooth device is: 2d2d 2222 2222 2d2d 2d22 2222 2222 2d22" (NOTE: The security key number will come in this format - ignore the spaces in the email when you type it in during installation later) HANG ONTO THIS KEY FOR USE LATER.

4. Go to the Dlink website and download DBT-120_revB3 drivers for XP (MAKE SURE IT'S REVISION 3):
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DBT%2D120%5FrevB3#
Copy it to your desktop to start the installation process.

5. From the "D-Link BTW 1.4.2.10 (User Input)" folder, run "setup.exe"

6. Follow the install steps until it asks you to enter a security key.

7. Enter your key from the email above.

8. When you get to the step that says "No Bluetooth device was detected..." then DO NOT CONTINUTE YET.

9. Next, insert the Adapter in a USB slot. Windows will automatically install it as a "Generic Bluetooth Device" or something like that. Wait for it to finish completely and for Windows to say "Your device is installed and ready to use."

10. Go to "My Computer", right click, and go to "Properties". Click on "hardware" tab and click "Device Manager" button. Under "Bluetooth Devices" right click on the "Generic Bluetooth Device" and go to "Reinstall Driver". Say that you dont want it to automatically search, that you want to select the driver, and say you have the disk. Point it to the driver found in the drivers you downloaded from DLink. It wont be signed, but thats OK. Select the D-Link one and let it install.

11. When you're done with the above step, check "Device Manager" "Bluetooth devices" and make sure that only DLink is there.

12. NOW, you can continue with the installation process. Click "OK" on the "No Bluetooth device was detected..." screen.

Let the process finish normally. And hopefully it will work.

Good luck.

Of course this will work only if you're using a DLINK Bluetooth dongle. This will probably not work if you're using other company's hardware.

Sentryboy - Thanks for your advise on page one.

I doubt I would ever have discovered that myself. I got to the point of purchasing another dongle to see if that was the problem.

Hey.. you know you've done something right when people are signing up just to say thanks.

Douglas

Another vote of thanks to Sentry Boy (see above) - the advice worked a treat with my Belkin F8T003v2 and SE K700i - I now finally have a bluetooth connection

After a whole night of deinstall / reinstalling drivers, fixed in 5 minutes.

i am also having similar problems -- similar but not exactly the same -- mine is with a bluetake bt009x dongle. as with others, it's giving me the 'no license' message when i try to right-click icon on tray.

been fighting with this on and off for 2 months (been busy otherwise).

after installing software as intsructed by bluetake tech support (repeatedly), get 'install new hardware wizard', run through all options to choose driver myself and am told i have a
'CSR Bluetooth Device in DFU State'
when i try to install driver using provided software, i reveive message above + error message:
'error in .inf file'

please help!

nz4eva perhaps you have another driver in your system? You might want trying to folllow the instructions in this thread to check if there's another driver - and switch to the correct one.

If you need more interaction, please open another thread.

Does anybody know what plans MS have for updated Bluetooth support in XP? Is there ever going to be the same sort of functionality that the Widcomms software offers built into Windows rather than the very basic support SP2 offers? While the Widcomm software does have nice features it has to be some of the most troublesome software around due to their stupid licencing requirements!!
