@Handle9 The mix of random access points and repurposed routers will be more or less the reason for things not working too well. The Edgerouter won't be causing the Chromecast to not work, it'll be due to this mix of access points. Your network is actually quite messy.

Try a single Cambium along with the Edgerouter to diagnose the Chromecast issue. If that works, then you've got a device not playing nice. Add devices until you see the Chromecast not working. I see no reason why the Edgerouter would be causing this.

If all out fails then post your Edgerouter configuration on here omitting personal details from it. But like I say - there shouldn't be any reason for your ER-Lite to be doing this.

I ended up factory reseting the edgerouter and doing a clean setup. The chromecast problems have gone away so it was definitely some form of config in the edgerouter that was the problem. It didn't make sense that it was to do with the access points as they all worked fine with an alternative router.

I'm sure it was something I did when I was playing around at some point but it's good to have it sorted.

Note: The ER-X/ER-X-SFP/EP-R6 has more limited storage, and in some cases, an upgrade may fail due to not enough space. If this happens, remove the old backup image first (using "delete system image" command, see here for more details) before doing an upgrade.

Thanks to @michaelmurfy for the awesome guide. I had signed up to Slingshot and was getting no more than 200/50 on the gigabit plan with both the supplied Netcomm router and my Dlink Viper. I was about to upgrade the Viper until I found this thread and picked up an Edgerouter Lite yesterday.

Just a question, I have followed your guide successfully and am now getting 500/300. I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to get closer to gigabit speeds. My home setup is simple: Edgerouter > 3Com 3CDSG8 gigabit switch. My house is wired with ethernet (6A). I have not strayed outside the setup guide. EDIT: I have my Dlink Viper as my wireless AP and have disabled DHCP.

Speedtest was done via speed-test cli on my dual opteron 270 server running Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS. I have also run it on my Macbook Pro via a USB3 - ethernet adapter and get similar results on speedtest.net.

~~Not too worried if this is the best I'm going to get, but thought I'd check if some tweaks can be applied.~~

Turns out I had DPI turned on from when I was messing around earlier. Now getting 650/400 :)

You should be able to get full speed even with DPI turned on, with offload turned on

I think I may have bricked my new ER-X...

Set it up, got internet working, everything seemed fine but I hadn't updated the firmware so I downloaded the newest one from the website and went to upload it. The first time the upload progress bar got to 100% but after a while it said update failed. So I uploaded it again and this time it worked fine, and asked me to reboot the router to upgrade the firmware.

I went and made lunch and when I came back it the online interface still hadn't come back on so I ate lunch and waited some more. After around 50 minutes it still hadn't come back so I tried a few things to access the page (using different ethernet ports, different browsers, restarting my PC a few times) but it didn't work so I power cycled it. I had googled and it suggested that the firmware update could take anywhere from 3-7 minutes so I figured after 50 minutes my only option was to power cycle (though I know generally this is a bad idea when updating firmware and I accept I probably should have done a bit more research at this point rather than later).

What happens now when I plug it in is the power light goes on, and when I plug a cable into eth0 the light for that goes on, but when I plug a cable into any of the other ports, the light doesn't come on and my pc doesn't recognise a network. I have tried resetting it a few times and the lights flash like they're supposed to, but afterwards I still can't access the router interface when I set a static ip (e.g. 192.168.1.10).

Reading the ubiquiti forums, it seems like this is not uncommon, with a few other people reporting similar issues, eventually resulting in them having to RMA the device. On the forums I read about that issue with ER-X's small memory size, but that shouldn't have been an issue since it was a new ER-X (I think) and I don't know if it would have even got to the point of asking to restart if I didn't have enough memory. Based on what I read, it seems like the only way to possibly fix it would be to open it up and wire up a serial cable to the internal headers and do some things that sound even more complicated than that.

Does anyone have any ideas for other things I could test? Otherwise I'll take it back and get a refund/replacement as I don't think it is something I have done but rather a problem that occurs sometimes, based on what I have seen on the Ubiquiti forums. Or if you think it might have been something I have done, please let me know so I don't do something stupid in the future :)

Since that requires opening up the device, I'll probably try and get a replacement before trying that but thanks for the link.

Also, that seems to require using eth1, though since the light doesn't go on for me and my computer doesn't recognise any network when plugged into that port, I wonder if it'd still work

I have a very dumb newbie question re: EdgeRouter X SFP

My Huawei 659 is a bit intermittent, so I think it is time to upgrade to something more reliable.

My requirement is very modest, basically I would like:

Eth0 to fibre broadband ONT

Eth1 to Unifi AP LC #1 (using the POE output)

Eth2 to Unifi AP LC #2 (using the POE output)

Eth3 to an old HP LaserJet with JetDirect

Eth4 to a NAS which I am yet to buy.

I would like to put Eth1-Eth4 under the same hardware switch

I have been doing lots of research and decide that this, if it will work, would suit me best because:

1. I get get rid of 3 AC wall plugs (2 for POE for the Unifi and one for the Huawei) and replace it with one (Just the ERX-SFP)

2. Presumably it would be more reliable than my Huawei

3. Cost less than a dedicated POE capable Gigabit switch and a dedicated router, it will also be cheaper than the higher end router-switch all-in-one.

This set up seems simple so I would imagine the Setup Wizard WAN 2LAN2 should be able to take care of that? However I have been trying to confirm whether this is a valid setup before I buy. Specifically I would like to make sure:

1. It is ok to plug the ONT directly to the RJ45 Eth0 rather than the SFP Eth5

2. The stock AC adaptor would power the unit and the two Unifi

3. Whether it is possible to put Eth1-Eth4 under the same hardware switch - I can't find any info which ports can be put under the switch.

4. Whether the WLAN-2LAN2 Wizard is the best to use - or am I better using the WLAN-LAN2 Wizard?

I am sorry about my dumb questions, but there is only so much Dr. Google can help with and some real expert help is much appreciated!

Plug whatever port you designate in to the ONT, the switch in to another port, and your devices (APs, NAS etc) in to the switch.

Why do you want the SFP model?

For ER-X (about $110) I will need a Gigabit Switch and if I want one with POE output so to save power sockets the cheapest is a TPLink for about $110. So total is $220. I will get rid of two POE AC adaptors for my Unifi but gain one AC plug for the switch.So net saving of one AC socket

Sorry my mistake, I was thinking you needed 1 port for the ONT plus 5 more for your devices and APs.

Yeah ER-X SFP sounds fine for what you want to do, no need for an additional switch. If you ever need an additional switch, just get an unmanaged one, they are plug and play, no need to configure.

@HenryNZ As you've got other UniFi devices then consider getting the UniFi Security Gateway instead. Very easy to manage and quite powerful still. Combine this with a UniFi Switch and you've got a full setup with a single control panel.

A bit more expensive, but very easy to manage.

I have a “friend” who I am helping set up an edgerouter for use with Orcon. It is plugging directly into the ONT. I am using VLAN 10 and he is getting an IP address. Everything is working correctly.

The only problem is that the edgerouter seems to stop receiving any traffic after exactly 5 minutes.
He gets the same IP whether using the provided gear or using the edgerouter.

I am remote and can only help when he is up. I thought it might be because orcon is blocking non-provided modems. I spoofed the MAC address and this made no difference.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I can post config if needed.

Also, side note, for whatever reason he cannot set a static address on the edgerouter. If he does he loses all connection.

I am not from NZ and am just learning about the unique fiber setup.

Thank you for any help anyone may provide.
