Actually I'm wondering if the issue is the cable from my ONT to my router, EdgeOS is showing eth0 is only connected at 100/full

Turns out it was the cables that connect the ONT to the router (ONT -> Wall Jacket -> Patch Panel -> Router). If I connect the ONT directly to the router I get a 1000/full connection.

Supported with a new speedtest result here.

Checked your Ethernet cables? That looks like you've got a 100Mbit link somewhere.

Apologies if I'm breaking posting rules by crossposting from the 'what router is best' thread but my question was unanswered there.

Since the whole range seems to use the same manual I hope an expert user of the UBQ edgerouters can answer my question. First a little perspective.

I need something like an edgerouter to interface my home network to my ISP. I had been using IPCOP behind orcon's router happily but my IPCOP PC died, again. I know IPCOP support stopped some time ago so this is a good excuse to improve the situation.

I don't need wireless support as I have three (FWIW tplink) PoE APs cabled out from my network cupboard.

What I need from my edgerouter is:

-ability to run VLANs if I ever start home automation type projects.

-I'm not fixated on removing the ISPs router, but if I can, good. I use orcon's phoneline VOIP service.

-ability to do some parental limiting , I'm talking blocking web sites and MAC addresses on schedules

-run a DMZ for playing on the big bad interweb

-ability to do some logging in case i want to see if little johnny has actually been doing his homework online

I checked out the ER-X (4 ports and 1 fibre) and the ERLITE-3 (3 ports). Since I have a 24 port switch and PoE injectors for my APs already, it looks like I can get by with three ports (LAN, WAN and DMZ).

OTOH the 5 port device is cheaper.

Can the 5 port device do everything on my list?

Not an answer to your question, but there is an ER-4 for sale on GZ, about $100 under the RRP.

What internet plan to do you have?

You'll be fine for any of the Edgerouters but why not just go for the overkill option here: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=262062

As for the ports I wouldn't worry about this too much. I run 3 networks - a main network, Guest VLAN and IoT VLAN over a single Ethernet port. With the correct VLAN plumbing ports on the router don't really matter. You can however segregate this however way you require.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I think my outstanding question is related to my need to schedule the blocking of ports/ips. Can that be done with EdgeOS?

Thanks, yes @mdf did describe his pihole.

I've got most devices like the tv hardwired so I need to work on the TV's IP address or YouTube's domain.
Tplink omada aps have some snazzy software for scheduling, multiple ssids etc so that's taken care of.

How to connect an EdgeRouter 4 to 2degrees gigabit fibre?

I have been using my ER-4 on a gigabit HFC cable connection for two years, with good speeds, and without any problems.

Fibre has (at last) come to our street, and was installed in our house yesterday.

Goodbye Vodafone, hello 2degrees. 🙂

The supplied 2degrees FRITZ!Box 7530 worked perfectly out of the box, but I cannot establish an internet connection with my ER-4 (with latest firmware: v.2.0.8).

I followed these guidelines on the 2degrees website : What settings should I use for BYO Modem?

... and I also re-read all of this thread. Yes, all 44 pages. 😐

I tried this:

Factory reset

WAN+2LAN2 wizard
Encapsulation: PPPoE
[username]@snap.net.nz
"The password you chose at sign up" <<< this may be the problem*
VLAN ID: 10
Enable the default firewall.

reboot

"No internet connection"

* The only self-selected password that I have is for "Log in to Your 2degrees Broadband" on their website.

How do I pull out password details from the FRITZ!Box?

If you used "thisistheusername" to login to the 2degrees broadband side of the website then your PPPoE username will be "thisistheusername@snap.net.nz"
Same password as the one used to login, PPPoE 10.

You can also change your broadband password at https://secure.2degreesbroadband.co.nz/profile/password/broadband

Failing that, you're best to give them a call.

Problem solved - it was a password problem all along - changed my password (as above) and suddenly "it just works" ... 🙂
