That's a very good question and everyone seems to dance around the answer. Many people have published white papers, thesis, strategies, etc. on whether the current bluetooth hardware stack (CSR chipset) can even support stereo. Many companies have announced BT stereo headsets, but none that I'm aware of ever made it to market.

I do see some prototypes that seem to be progressing but they're using a totally different chip set and protocol stack design. They're more of a complete package than just a headset (e.g. an MP3 player that can connect via bluetooth to stereo headsets designed to work with the host unit).

A recent Bluetooth SIG newsletter has the head of Nokia talking of eSCO's (extended SCO, which translates to no SCO and all ASL) to overcome the "legacy design and outdated performance". Also, it's often mentioned that the current protocol is just way too "noisy". Much is discussed of a more efficient frequency-hopping to make for a more efficient WPAN and one that plays well with WiFi in the same frequency.

My feeling is that we'll end up with two protocol stacks. The existing which works very well for many uses and a more advanced stack to handle streaming audio and video. Much like "b" WiFi vs "g". "b" will never give you true bandwidth and performance for streaming video, but for most purposes it fits the bill.

If you are following the long "Widcomm 1.4.... is comming" thread you will know that there is now a crack for 1.4.2.10 and I can happily say that its working and best of all, I am now able to use my Jabra BT200 as headset for e.g. VOIP without the speed-problem.

HOOAH :-)

Glad to hear that the proposed hack of 1.4.2.10 is working for D-Link. I'm anxious to hear of your results in using your headset with VoIP and/or IM solutions. In testing with Belkin (1.4.2.10), I'm still experiencing streaming and high CPU constraints in transmission.

Personally, I've decided to hold off for D-Link's supported release. I've been aware of this hack for many weeks; however, have noted mixed results on total effectiveness (e.g enables some functionality and disables or inhibits other functionality).

Since Widcomm's security basically writes the BDA to every dll and associated registry entries, it's just not worth the risk of trashing my registry and presenting future install problems, since 1.4.2.10 still has a few reported bugs. Hopefully, you've made a good backup prior to installation. :-)

Hope all goes well and looking forward to your findings.

Hi,
I have the same config as you Chris but can't get the DBT to find my HBH-35. Is there something I am overlooking ? I tried installing the latest widcomm drivers but it was a complete mess and had to come back to the older ones.
Thanks for help

Fred,

Some D-Link users are still having problems with the latest 1.4.2.10a drivers. The issue has been reported to D-Link; however I haven't seen any definitive solution as to why the Widcomm drivers work for some and not for others.

My recommendation would be to use the previous version (1.4.1.6a) as it appears to be more stable. You only need the latest version if you have Windows 2003 as you OS and if you need to record audio on your PC via a bluetooth headset.

As to pairing your HBH-35 with your PC using 1.4.1.6, follow this guide on this site exactly per instructions and you should have no problems. Try it and let me know.

Good Luck!

Thanks Chris but the guide you're refering to states :

"In this article we're using an Ericsson HBH20 and a TDK USB Bluetooth (version 1.3.2.7). We assume your devices are already paired. If not, do it first, then come back here! "

My problem is I can't even find my hbh-35 headset in the bluetooth neighbourhood, though my 3650 is paired without any problems.
I'm probably not doing something the right way but in my opinion the HBH35 can only be turned on/off (green pulse) and that's it. I then initiate a search of new devices in the bluetooth neighbourhood but nothing shows up (my 3650 is turned off)
Any idea ?
Thanks
Fred

Forgot to mention this :
I'm using the Widcomm 1.2.2.15 which came with the 3.10 CD.
Is this driver supporting the headset/audio gateway ?
Thx

Fred, Widcomm 1.2 doesn't support the headset profile.

Ahhh OK !! Then should I download the 1.4.6a ?
Do I need to uninstall my 1.2 drivers first ? Is it an easy install because I was having a lot of trouble (to put it mildly) trying to upgrade to 1.4.10a and then 1.4.6a, it all backfired and then I rolled back to 1.2.2.15 by doing an XP restore and reinstall.
Thanks for all you help
Fred

The 1.4 is probably one of the best software around, but if had problem before you might want to set a restore point on Windows XP. You should remove the previous software before proceeding too...

Ok for 1.4.6 but should I get it from the d-link.com or from the european dlink-co.uk support website ? Or is that the same driver ?
Apparently on the european support site they make a difference between a range of SN in the B3 version and mine does not need the security key.

Please check the label at the back of your DBT-120: Check the hardware revision (H/W)
and serial number (S/N)

You are in "Case 1" if:

a. H/W revision is B2 or earlier OR
b. H/W revision is B3, and S/N is in the range:
BN31139000001 ~ BN31139000600 or
BN32139000503 ~ BN32139002500 or
BN32139007407 ~ BN32139008100

For this case, you need to get a security key for your DBT-120.
Please follow the procedure detailed at:
http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1328&question=DBT-120

You are in "Case 2" if:

a. H/W revision is B3 AND
b. S/N is NOT within the above ranges

Fred,

I only use the US support site. If your documentation references the UK website, I would try the drivers found there.

There are two driver sets for the B3 hardware; one requires an updated Widcomm security key and once does not (use the key found in your install kit). It looks like the UK site uses the serial number to differentiate which set of 1.4.1.6 to download. The US site uses the version number of the install CD to differentiate.

Dlink's 1.4.1.6 software is very stable and I've never had any problems since first installed in August 2003. Nothing as experienced in the problems with the 1.4.2.10 software. However, I agree with Freitasm that it's a good practice to always set a restore point prior to installing software if you have XP. You should also disable any anti-virus software prior to install.

Hi Chris,
I now installed the 1.4.2.6 version from the UK website and installed it after uninstalling the old version and nokia's suite.
Bluetooth symbol comes up white and everything seems ok, during install I'm asked to fill out a security code which I received by mail from widcomm. No error messages during install, only a network cable unplugged for Bluetooth network.

Then the trouble starts : when trying to add new devices in my bluetooth neigbourhood, I get a message saying 'Security code not found. To enter security code run BTFaeSec.exe in folder: Program Files\Widcomm\Bluetooth Software\bin"
Problem is there is no such folder as the installed software was in French and installed a Logiciel Bluetooth folder in Widcomm.
I then uninstalled it again and cleaned the remaining files I found in the registry referring to Widcomm. But I still get the same message.
What should I do ?
Thanks
Fred

Forgot to say this :
Strange thing is : I'm in case 2 (no security key needed) but still was asked one during install !!
As there wasn't any in my original installation kit, had to provide the one obtained from Widcomm by mail and install procedure just continued after that.
