The ONT is probably OK. Looks like the hybrid cable is going all the way in to the splice tray on the back so is taking most of the strain off - although strain relief is just a zip tie sooooo..

What I would be worried about though, is to get that ONT off, they would have had to take it off the back mount/splice tray. If you aren't sure what to expect, very easy to break a splice. When the ONT is powered back on, just make sure you get a green optical light. if it's red, call your provider right away to get a fault logged. And then be prepared to get a bill from Chorus for fixing it.

Thanks for the tips, and info about the back mount. It will be the installer who would need to sort out fixing it / billing etc if it isn't working after they have completed their work. The internet connection was working fine prior to them removing it, as I was using the internet over wifi on it, so they couldn't blame it on a chorus installation problem.

I've only just seen this thread, and am just marveling at that first picture. What a complete abortion. Never seen anything like it!

Just an update. The cupboard now looks like this, which has been done by a new installer, although it is still to be completed. The new installer seems to know what they are doing. They have had to use a wide cabinet face fixed, due to the cables being cut short by the previous installer, and this will also gives more room around components for airflow, as it has a far larger internal volume to it. The only issue they warned about, was that due to the incoming cables being short, they won't be able to order the patch outlets very well, so won't necessarily be in any order. Also there will have to be some patching and replastering of the wall over where the old cabinet was.

@mattwnz So much better! Only thing left is to get a nice rackmount switch. I recommend Ubiquiti along with a USG and UniFi access points.

Thanks, I will have to look into all that in the future! At least the first stage of the setup now all looks good.

That's much, much better. Bit of a shame that they cut the cables so short on the first attempted 'fix'.

The ONT was all good once it was hooked back up?

Yes ONT works fine and no red warning lights. Internet speeds look about what they should too.

What don't you like?

Apart from know cable management as Cyril mentioned, it's head and shoulders above most of what I see posted on here. It's a 19" cabinet for starters!

One negative is the room space consumption, but with no context of the rest of the room it's hard to tell.

Going by the picture it looks like it is mounted in a wall recess. You could disguise it as a mini bar or bookshelf.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

IMO

you could have done most of it in a larger recessed cabinet, just mounted the patch panels vertically. there is still the opening behind it, which i will assume will be covered over, and the fact the rack is in the middle of a wall. would have been tidier in a corner.

Im just not a fan of having the ONT in the network rack

Luckily it is in a large cupboard, so the space it takes up isn't an issue.
