you could have done most of it in a larger recessed cabinet, just mounted the patch panels vertically. there is still the opening behind it, which i will assume will be covered over, and the fact the rack is in the middle of a wall. would have been tidier in a corner.
Im just not a fan of having the ONT in the network rack
The top will be covered, but probably with some type of MDF cover, as I think most of the cables go through the top due to them being short. So it may not be possible to gib, and a lot of work involved in patching a gib hole for the builder. I will have to look at it though in the weekend to see what the best way to fix the hole is. I don't think they are patching the back of the cabinet so will be open.
I thought a long cabinet would work too, although it would have needed several shorter patch panels at the top, due to the cables being cut to short . However the installer said it wasn't possible due to the framing. Although it was 600 framing, and there was just a dwang below the old cabinet, there was gib on the other side of the wall, so removing that dwang could have cause problems for the gib fixing.
