IMO

you could have done most of it in a larger recessed cabinet, just mounted the patch panels vertically. there is still the opening behind it, which i will assume will be covered over, and the fact the rack is in the middle of a wall. would have been tidier in a corner.

Im just not a fan of having the ONT in the network rack

The top will be covered, but probably with some type of MDF cover, as I think most of the cables go through the top due to them being short. So it may not be possible to gib, and a lot of work involved in patching a gib hole for the builder. I will have to look at it though in the weekend to see what the best way to fix the hole is. I don't think they are patching the back of the cabinet so will be open.

I thought a long cabinet would work too, although it would have needed several shorter patch panels at the top, due to the cables being cut to short . However the installer said it wasn't possible due to the framing. Although it was 600 framing, and there was just a dwang below the old cabinet, there was gib on the other side of the wall, so removing that dwang could have cause problems for the gib fixing.

Wow - Just stumbled on this thread and that original install was STUNNING in how bad it was. You can actually get away with a lot with ethernet cable in general and I've seen things work that just shouldn't but the level of wrong here was a special kind of skill. At the end of the day, hard to pick on the Sparky who did it except to say he should have recognised his lack of experience and suggested someone else to do that bit of the job. The way he'd stripped the outer back and then sort of loomed it altogether was amazing.

It really was a very good example of what NOT to do with Data cabling. I've seen some shockers though, saw a sparky who overhead a talk about a wiring install say "Oh I can do that for you while I'm hear and it'll be much cheaper". Proceeded to install all the outlets and have all of the cat5e going back to one point but A) he didn't label ANYTHING and B) he didn't install a patch panel responding "Oh no, thats the tenants job" as if it was asking for a switch or router. Also he'd trimmed the cable back so there was no slack and only a few inches hanging out from the hole in the wall so the guys who came and bailed them out had a hell of a time doing the punchdown work on the back of the patch panel.

Lol, not to detract from the thread, but i remember an apprentice that we had years ago being asked to remove the switch from the Network cupboard of an office we were leaving. Came back a couple of hours later and there he was in the warehouse door looking proud as punch with all the patch panels/framing and bits of Ethernet cable still attached where it was cut.

That was a long day and a learning curve for him

Neat and tidy has a place, but sometimes a bit of slack helps future proof the job and the next guy.

Lol - Went to do a job at a school on the west coast years ago to connect the libary with the admin block - Fibre link is in they said. Got there and the fibre was hanging out of the wall un-terminated. Turned out the Sparky got his junior to install a power socket in the cabinet and the pesky cables got in the way so he cut them thinking he could rejoin them later. DOH
