I have an iPAQ 3870
Just bought bluetooth adaptor (MSI - PC 2 PC)

Active sync just doesn't recognised the device. (The bluetooth managers on my PC & iPAQ recognise each other).

I have virtual com port 5 set-up. - keeps coming back - device not recognised when trying to connect.

I do have 2 com ports on my PC bluetooth manager (Local Services tab - gives activesync as COM6 , Client Servises tab gives Bluetooth Serial port as COM5. Also on the iPAQ , blutooth manager , settings for all devices, serial port tab shows Inbound COM port as COM7 and Outbound COM port as COM8)

Not sure if any r all these need to be aligned - but all are greyed out so cannot change.

Any help would be greatlyapprecaited.

Rich

Hi!

You should configure your ActiveSync as COM6, since this is the Local Services (incoming) port. Also, make sure the adapter is connected directly to your computer, and not to a USB HUB if this is a USB adapter.

That could be do to a firewall blocking part of the communications. I take it you are starting it on the iPAQ, and from within the Bluetooth Manager?

Thanks for the help.

Yes - I'm starting from the iPAQ, bluetooth activesync. This just seems to hang-up on the "clock" - doing something icon.

I set Active sync on the PC to COM5 , but still appears in Bluetooth services manger "local services tab" as COM6.

Not sure how to change this to COM5 - when I double click it gives me the choice of COM6 or COM10-15 only. No COM5 ?

You have to change the ActiveSync to wait for connection on the local services port. You can't change the local services port on the Bluetooth configuration.

The way to do it by right-clicking the ActiveSync icon, and selecting Connection Settings. The first drop down list is where you'll select the same port that is defined on local services. In your case it seems to be COM6, so you have to change it to this.

And keep starting the connection from the Pocket PC. I recommend you read this guide if you want to see some screenshots.

Thanks again.

I've tried this.

When I start Activesync from the iPAQ - nothing , the iPAQ just seems to be "in process" for ever.

No response from the PC.

(When I set the COM5 on the PC active sync - I do get a pop-up on the iPAQ asking if I will allow access - so the 2 do seem to talk to each other)

Bluetooth Local services tab shows an activesync option as COM6 - no matter what I do, enev though activesync itself is set for COM5. Not sure if this matters

"enev though activesync itself is set for COM5"...

COM5, according to your previous post is the client port. This port is used for outgoing connections (from your computer to another device). ActiveSync is expecting an incoming connection (from another device to your computer).

You should have ActiveSync set to listen the COM6.

Also, have you checked David's suggestion on the firewall? If you run Zone Alarm please change its security level to medium.

In summary , I have

On Bluetooth Configuration on the PC :-
Local Services : Activesync COM6
Client Applications : Bluetooth Serial Port COM5
Neither of these can be changed (only to COM 11-15)

On Activesync 3.5 on PC "Connection Settings"
- COM5
(I've also tried setting to COM6 to no avail)

On the iPAQ
- All is set-up as per instructions.
- Bluetooth manager , settings for all devices , Serial port tab shows :
Inbound COM Port : COM7
Outbound COM Port : COM8

If it's something to do with the firewall - I'm completely lost.
I have Symantec Client Firewall, this is a company PC. I have no idea how to change anything on this.

I've searche dthe internet for help - to no avail. Your help so far has been the best, but if I come up against the firewall - I may never get this thing working. Is this a problem with the MSI adaptor , ie should I try one of the others (TDK, Belkin .. ?)

Thanks again

Rich

Some more information - if anyone can help :

I have completely deleted my firewall - still nothing.

I tried connecting the iPAQ using serial cable - this didn't work either. (It still works with USB !?)

Maybe this isn't a bluetooth problem , hmmmmm

Should I adjust any settings on the iPAQ to accept a serial connection ? (eg on Activesync, tools : Enable sync when cradled with '115200 ... '57600,'Bluetoothactivesync,'USB, I have this set to USB as default is this right ?)

If I can get the serial cable working - then I will retry with bluetooth.

Getting desperate now ...

First you might want to take a deep breath, and try to relax just a bit.

When you post what you have done, you may want to post some like this....

On my PC I have done;
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
............................

On my PocketPC I have done;
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
................................
When I try to Sync
I start it under Bluetooth Manager on the PocketPC
I get a display on my PocketPC saying.....
On my PC the Bluetooth icon changes color from dark blue and red to light blue and green
Then the Bluetooth icon becomes animated
The ActiveSync icon changes from gray to green

Or
The Bluetooth icon changes color
I get a pop-up box, that ask if I should allow a coonection...

or
On my PC nothing at all happens that I can see,
Bluetooth icon does not change color,
ActiveSync icon does not change color
No boxes pop up.

When I read over what you have posted I am sometimes unsure where you have done it at, if it is on the PC or the PocketPC.

I have a small note book, that has a LCD that can only display part of my desktop at any one time. With Windows XP I have noticed that small boxes have a way of not popping to the top. If you try to sync with a window open on your desktop you may not display all the pop ups that you need to see.

The more info you can post, the more chances you will have of being helped. Also with firewalls, as a general rule they need to be disabled, or uninstalled, and not deleted, if you go in an just delete files you can get very unpredictable results has been my experience.

As to the serial connection.
Do you have the serial cable connected to a serial port on your PC?
Have you un-connected the USB cable?
On the PC have you pointed ActiveSync at the serial port you are now using?
On the PocketPC Enable sync when cradled with '115200'

OK - thanks ( I've tried alot of things - seems its coming out like garbage !!)

Here's what I've done :-

On th PC (Windows 2000)
1. Installed the Bluetooth Drivers
2. In Bluetooth Config - Local services Tab , I have seen that the serial port is assigned to COM6.
3. In Active sync, I ensured that the connection settings are looking at COM6

On the iPAQ
1. Turned on the radio
2. In Bluetooth manager, I have found my PC
3. Opened the icon for my PC
4. Created a bond
5. Checked the "Activesync partner" box.
(Note: In many guides on this, including on Geekzone - I have seen screenshots which show the "actions" pop-up menu with a number of options, mine only has "remove bond" & "remove device")

To Sync
1. Start from iPAQ bluetooth manager
2. The PC bluetooth icon turns green for 0.5 seconds, then goes white again.
3. The iPAQ clock keeps ticking - this stays like that. When I stop it - I cannot re-access bluetooth manager, have to press the reset switch on the iPAQ
4. There are no messages on iPAQ or PC

I have tried the following
1. Upgraded Active stync 3.5 to 3.7.1
2. Downloaded the microsoft bluetooth manager "fix"
3. Changed the settings on the iPAQ activesync "Enable sync when cradled using :" from USB , to bluetooth , to 115200
4. Changed the COM port to COM5 on the PC (to match the Client services)

All to no avail. Same problem as above

(Note: The serial cable connection now works OK - please ignore my comments on this - I had the wrong COM port selected !, aslo I have uninstalled the firewall)

Please ask me if you need any more information, I hope this is clearer.

Many thanks

My situation is word for word identical to Marks except I am on WinXP with a belkin USB dongle and the WIDCOMM drivers.

Exact same scenaria though.

The 3870 and PC talk fine, I can manually establish a serial connect but upon starting activesync from the bluetooth mananger menu on the PPC, I get the clock hanging and then that is it.

Everything else checks out.

To add something to this, I think one of the keys is that my iPAQ does not successfully retrieve all services from the desktop computer.

No matter what I do when I connect/bond with my PC it never comes back with the list of all the services.

All I get are remove this device and remove bond with this device.

I think because of this the PPC doesn't even know it can initiate a serial connection with the computer and hence doesn't even try because just as Marksrd, I don't get a connecting screen on my iPAQ, just a frozen clock.

So why wouldn't the iPAQs be picking up all the possible services?

Are you using the Pocket PC OS 2002? The Bluetooth on this version supports only seven services in the list. If you computer offers more than this (and this is true if your computer is using Widcomm 1.3 and up), then you need to disable any service you're not using.

Open the Bluetooth configuration and change to Local Services. Uncheck the services like Fax or Synchronisation. Then soft reset your Pocket PC and try again.

I actually got it fixed. I uninstalled all the bluetooth and reinstalled.

Everything worked right off the bat..

It picked up all the services on my PPC right away.

Glad to here yours works - mine still dosen't.

I've got the same problem - not all services are shown.

I have spoken with HP - they agreed this was starnge. The iPAq is currently away at their repair centre to see if they can sort it out ! (It went last week - claimed tehy repaired - but same problem).

How did you re-install the bluetooth software ?

I have tried several hard resets.

Lets see if HP can sort it out ...
