Most standard adsl modems come with 4 ethernet ports. In order to present 20 ethernet ports I plan to hang a layer 2 switch off one of the ports.
By keeping everything layer 2 there should be minimal configuration on the switch, but i'm guessing at least a vlan?
Anyone share some 'been there done that stories'?

Just be aware that if all 20 devices try to use the net at the same time. Almost guaranteed it will bog down your ADSL connection.

A leyer2 switch is basically your stock standard dumb switch. There is nothing to configure because there won't be anything configurable in them as they lack any L3 or smart features.

As pointed out though 20 PC's off an ADSL2+ connection (assuming these will be users actually doing something) is a recipe for disaster as the connection will probably end up saturated.

Thanks for the reply.

Chorus are just spray painting the street for fibre, so by the time the business is up and running we will be on fibre. If my modem is wise enough I could always shape users downloads. I'm hoping to find a modem that can offer multiple ssids for wifi, good traffic shaping

So if I can source a layer 3 switch what would be the go?
Create a vlan on the modem, create the same vlan on the L4 switch and ensure all user ports are configured with the same vlan.
The users still receive their dhcp via the modem, ensure the users default gw is the modem. The only L3 address req'd on the switch would be for mgmt?

You're overthinking it.

L2 switch for wired PCs, a decent 5Ghz AP for wireless users.

It will always be better to control your users with education that technological measures. (Source: 20 years of experience with these things and never having been wrong on that assertion)

THanks for the reply.
My users are going to be nightly guests, as i'm starting a small 9 bedroom boutique accommodation business.
I'm keen to offer wired ethernet and wireless, so I can cater for business guests re the wired choice.
This will also help the performance of the wifi in the building if some users use wired and I can give them an option if there are any wifi complaints. I'm thinking to have an ssid for each bedroom so if usage gets out of hand its easier to know which room and shape via that ssid.

Chuckle... Now you have a whole host of problems. What's your solution for tracking users so that when you get copyright notices from your ISP you can pass them on to the correct user - or your solution to try and stop users downloading copyrighted material?

I think you should look into an off the shelf solution to provide temporary guest access. You also do need to be able to segment users from each other.

Cheers - N

I've been thinking about this over the last couple of days. I have a few months until we'll have renovated and be open, so i'm about to ask my isp what happens in such a case.

Even data accuracies create an intersting grey area:

I recently got charged 30Gb of data whilst streaming the wimbledon tennis mens final via tvnz website from my ISP. When the night before the womans final (which was an hour shorter match) only resulted in under 2 Gb of data.

Tvnz confirmed the size of the file was less than 3Gb, but the ISP just says, well that is what our records state you downloaded.

I know the likes of Zyxel do an out of the box solution for situations like this, right down to the slip printer for the password. That was 5 years ago, but I'm sure there will still be similar products on the market. No point reinventing the wheel.

No disrespect intended, but I believe with your apparent new-ness to the IT area, this might be a complex thing to start with AND get right first time. I'd recommend that you engage a professional to scope it and set it up.

Don't bet on it, Just becuse they are about to start physical works doesn't mean you will be offered service as soon as it is finished, it can be as long as 6 months subsequent or longer....

As he not an ISP he can not pass the notice on. As the account holder he will have to pay the fine, then try and get money back from the people that did the downloading. Good luck on that.

You don't have to be an ISP, just a Service Provider. Places like schools can choose to do either I believe.

(But yes, they usually choose not to take on the responsibility of passing through the notices)

Cheers - N

you mean an IPAP? he still can not become one of them either as he does not meet

1.Bill the person or organisation
2.Are primarily in the business of providing such services
3.Are providing your services to fixed users on a continual basis, not on a transient basis

Good to be thinking about cabling the property whilst renovations are in process.  Also think about feeding TV to each room if that is needed.

Here's a couple of resources to give you an idea of what is involved:

It would be a good idea to buy a home networking cabinet to hold all the equipment, and also to hold the UFB ONT when that becomes available.
