Hi all we've just upgraded our ADSL broadband+phone connection to a VDSL naked broadband with 2degrees.
We have 5 jackpoints in the house. before, we had Spark router connected in our living room. after the upgrade that jackpoint stopped working and only 2 of them work in the house and they're way too far from the router.
I really would like to use the one next to the TV to be able to use the ethernet cable for faster connection. I heard about master filter being installed and it separates the phone connection to vdsl connection. I have few questions if you don't mind:

-If a master filter is installed can I get rid of it myself and will that open up the other jackpoints?
-Also will I lose any connection speed after eliminating the master filter?
-Where's the master filter installed?
-Can I change the dedicated jackpoint to a different one without cancelling the master filter?

Thanks all for your help in advance

Cheers

EDIT: we don't have a phone connection anymore but Spark said they can see our phone line blocked at the background. I don't know if that makes any sense.

do not what ever you do remove the master filter if you want to use the phone jacks, this prevents voice going to the VDSL modem, this prevents disconnects and other conditions that can impact the speed you see.

master filter is usually in the External termination point, or where the first jack in the house is.

no you cant easily change the jack point.

you should have told them where you wanted things at the time of instillation and they should have left the rest of the jack points alone.

why are you worried about the phone connections if you have naked VDSL anyways?

do you have a house with structured wiring?

You should not touch your master filter if you don't know what you're doing, as you will likely not just lose connection speed, but your connection too.

Odd that you have 2 jackpoints that work; are you sure it's 2?  When they installed the VDSL did they come and install a new jackpoint? Or label one as the DSL\modem jackpoint?

The mater filter is most likely installed in your ETP, but again don't touch it if you don't know what you're doing.

Yes, you may be able to get master filter changed to a different jackpoint;  You could possibly have asked for this when it was installed, but given that sounds like it's already done you may need to pay someone to move it. You could contact CoffeeBaron on these forums and he may be able to help with this.

EDIT: bah, beaten too it :P

Hi, thanks for the reply helps a lot. Ok I won't touch the master filter :) but no one came to the hous ethey just called me that night and said it was done and I tried all the jackpoints only 2 worked (closer to outside of the house) So they should've asked me which jackpoint I want for the connection?

Jase2985: I have an android TV box and the wifi is a bit crappy as the router being behind 2 walls. I did a research and the box works best with ethernet cable. Also we spend most of our time in the living room using ipads, phones, laptops etc.
No idea how the wire structure is with Spark ADSL we had 2-3mbps download speed now I have 12mbps with naked VDSL

Thanks again

EDIT: How can I get the jackpoint working in the living room again so can move the router there

There's your problem, VDSL should have a master filter installed for best performance.  First call your ISP, if they don't offer it (some don't) then I'd suggest calling one CoffeeBaron to come and do it properly and put the VDSL point where you want it.

cheers for the reply mate. when we switched over I always thought someone would at least come over to test the connection. We're with 2 Degrees. DO you think shall I call them? I don't even know if I have a master filter?

Yes it sounds very much like you don't actually have a master filter, as they generally schedule a time when you're home to come and install it. It would seem unusual for them to just come and install it without your knowledge.

EDIT: Yes, definitely raise it with 2 degrees. Just be honest, tell them you don't know whether you have a master filter, but the fact you have no jackpoint specifically marked for the modem sounds like you don't.

If I were you, I'd probably just plug it into the jackpoint where you want it to work, then ring them and complain it's not working there. Ask if a master filter was installed as part of your original connection and if not ask for one.

Is there anyone here from 2 degrees? I don't really know what I'm asking on the phone but at least these guys will back me up here.

Cheers

There should only be one working jack-point for VDSL. If no one came to do the wiring then I'd say there is no master filter installed. Reason it may have stopped working where your had modem plugged in for ADSL, is likely that jack-point (and others) were a bit marginal. May have worked "ok" on ADSL, but as VDSL is way fussier then that's probably why not working now.

Thanks for that mate. I have 2 jackpoints working (both on an opposite facing wall but 2 separate rooms) When I was with Spark, connection used to drop a lot, now looks fine but I really would like to get the jackpoint working in the living room so I can plug my ethernet to my TV box. What do you suggest?

Cheers

EDIT: is master filter work for ADSL or VDSL, or both?

Master filter is for both ADSL or VDSL. Not all ISP's will include this for naked VDSL, so let us know how you go with asking 2degrees. If no luck, I can do master filter installs in Auckland, Waikato & BoP.

I was instructed by 2degrees that a master filter install is no longer covered under their standard connection fee. (unlike when it was SNAP)

So you presumably don't have a master filter. This is a Bad Thing.

The next question is therefore: How good is your VDSL connection?

You need to know this before you decide whether to spend money on a master filter install.

To quote PeterReader:

"If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router
- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

"Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
- Your general location (or street)
- If you are rural or urban
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

"A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

"I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)
- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?
