So for whatever reason I (and someone a lot more experienced than me) cannot get VLAN 802.1Q tagging working on a Gargoyle running WR1043ND v2.1.

So I resigned myself to lookat at a mitrotik router and following Sbiddle's blog post here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/8744

B
eing adverse to spending any more money, I had a thought.  I'm running a cisco 2950 as a dumb switch.  Surely this honking great big heavy noisy thing can do this.

As far as I know I've cleared it of it's old company settings, and may have killed off all the vlans if not left the vlan1 which is a default.

But if I wanted to create the VLAN 10 I need to hook this thing to the ONT then have my router in behind it - before feeding the router back into the switch.

Would anyone have some fairly step by step instructions on what I'd do?  I've been into this thing once via a console connection and as far as I know it doesn't show up on the network as a pingable device.  I still have the console cable.

Cool.

So from this I assume Port 1 goes to my WAN router, and port 2 is connected to the ONT?

Then Would I assume that Lan1 on the Router goes back to teh Switch (say port 3).  Does a vlan for 3 - 24 need to be set up?

No, the vlan on 3-24 is vlan1 by default, and you will likely want to leave it that way.

Ok. But I'd be correct in the I need to plug my router on the lan side back into the switch, any port but 1 and 2

If you plan to use the rest of the switch, yes.

So I've managed to get the vlan created:
VLAN Name Status Ports
---- -------------------------------- --------- -------------------------------
1 default active Fa0/1, Fa0/2, Fa0/3, Fa0/4,
Fa0/5, Fa0/6, Fa0/7, Fa0/8,
Fa0/9, Fa0/10, Fa0/11, Fa0/12,
Fa0/13, Fa0/14, Fa0/15, Fa0/16,
Fa0/17, Fa0/18, Fa0/19, Fa0/20,
Fa0/21, Fa0/22, Fa0/23
2 cisco_vlan_2 active
10 UFB active

VLAN Type SAID MTU Parent RingNo BridgeNo Stp BrdgMode Trans1 Trans2
---- ----- ---------- ----- ------ ------ -------- ---- -------- ------ ------
1 enet 100001 1500 - - - - - 0 0
2 enet 100002 1500 - - - - - 0 0
10 enet 100010 1500 - - - - - 0 0

And if I read correctly port 24 (will use 24 for ONT and 23 for Wan side of router) is now not part of vlan1 right?  (Seems it was the switchport mode trunk took it out, and switchport mode access puts it back).

It didn't seem to like this command though: switchport trunk allowed 10

Because Fa0/24 is a trunk port it won't show up in that list anymore

show spanning-tree vlan 10 will show you all the active ports in the vlan.
