I'm looking at tidying up my network and am about ready to go for an Edgerouter ERPoe‑5 with a UAP‑AC‑PRO for WiFi.
I've been reading/watching a lot of online info on the subject and my brain has turned to mush so I'm hoping some of the resident experts can help with some questions.
- How does the band steering work (I've never used it on any device so have no clue). Is it just one SSID created and the system figures out if your device should use 2.4 or 5Ghz. Or do you need to create 2 SSID's (same name) for each band?
- In the documents and other info I have seen/read there is a lot of talk about guest policies/isolation/landing pages etc.
I'm wanting to setup a separate VLAN for work provided devices when at home. I would want these work devices to be isolated from each other but using a WPA2 passkey that doesn't expire or require any landing page interaction etc. I'm assuming that this can be done? - Is it possible to setup different DHCP IP/Subnet AND DNS for each VLAN. eg Home-devices VLAN using a region-unblocker DNS while the work-device-at-home VLAN uses the ISP DNS.
- It should be able to, but can someone confirm that static routes can be added to the Edgerouter to block outgoing DNS requests from devices (Roku etc) and be forced to use my DNS settings.
- Does the Edgerouter have a NTP server that other devices on the LAN can get their time from?
- Can (how easy is it) the Edgerouter be setup to allow external VPN access (windows tablet/laptop) to the Edgerouter with only internet access back out (no LAN access). eg VPN connection from hotel/airport WiFi to router and access internet (online banking etc) securely.
- I'm looking at the AC-Pro access point. Given there is about $100 difference between that and the AC-Lite access point I am still considering the Lite version. As far as I can tell the AC-Pro has a bit more bandwidth, is capable of normal POE connections, and uses 3x3 MIMO(instead of 2x2). In everyday practical use is there much of a difference in terms of stability and performance between the two access points?
Thanks in advance
