So, i have had fibre for a while now and am struggling with wireless signal which keeps dropping out on all devices. This happens every couple of minutes and its driving me crazy.

I would really like to have the ONT relocated to a different part of the house, closer to where all out equipment is. I wasnt able to have it installed where i wanted it intially beacuse the installer just wouldnt do it.

Can anybody recommend somewhere in Christchurch that would do this?

Thanks.

Call your RSP. They will arrange for Enable (assuming you're in an Enable part of town) will come and do this. I'm pretty sure like Chorus it's a fixed cost unless work is major.

The cheapest way would be to run an ethernet cable from the ONT to the router, surely. Moving the ONT will incur higher costs.

Running ethernet to the main living area and relocating the router means i have 30m of cable going down the length of the house with no way of tidying it up. Major trip hazard! Moving the ONT would be a better long term solution.

Will try Skinny tomorrow and see what they say. I dont mind paying if it means the problem goes away :)

Thanks

No, we have solid concrete floors, also flat roof so no roof space to run it through either. If only it were that easy!

So how do you expect the fibre installer to get the cable to the new location?

Hi, as mentioned by djtOtago, if you cannot run an ethernet cable (by that I mean correctly installed in walls, ceiling, under floor or via conduit down the outside of the building) then how exactly is the Chorus tech going to do the same, the fibre needs a same/similar path and installation methods. Further moving the fibre and ONT is costly compared to installing cat5e/6 as it involves more complex termination equipment and a smaller group of people who can do it (ie enables installer crew).

I strongly recommend you look at getting a sparkie or data cabler to take a look at options to run cat5e/6.

And finally where exactly is the ONT now, I assume in the garage, this is a normal location, how old is the house, by the sounds of it with slab floors and skelton ceilings it might be reasonably new, is it possible the phone wiring is of cat5e and can be re wired by a determined data cabler to do ethernet, might need small mid span switches or compliant joints in some bedrooms along the way to get it there but still might work, lateral thinking is probably needed.

i dont know about enable but chorus will only run cables through a wall from one side to the other not down a wall from the top or a bottom, they will use capping.

Can you run your ethernet cable outside, around the house to were you want to be? Thinking outside the box!

I just use Amplifi HD mesh wifi in a similar situation, only google home and one PC wired to router. Everything else is wifi.

Sounds like an (or multiple) Wifi extender(s) might actually be the most cost-effective and simple way of solving this issue.

We have our ONT in the front room (which as it turns out is perfect for me as that's where my "office" is, but it's bad from a performance perspective as the rest of the house is not in a good Wifi reception radius.

I use a plug-in extender part way down the hall and it extends the coverage quite nicely. It's trial and error as to where you place it as it needs to overlap the signal from the modem/router signal, but I find it effective

Talking about WiFi extenders are banned on Geekzone. These cause massive issues to wireless networks are are not the best solution at all. Mesh is far better however still not ideal, the only solution is moving the ONT or just running Ethernet.

Do not use WiFi extenders or you might end up getting worse WiFi than before. If you use WiFi extenders you will end up with half available bandwidth, a lot of interference and poor performance.

Best case scenario for a wireless solution is to use a mesh system - there are plenty around. The D-Link COVR AC2200 for example, will use its own wireless link between access points, avoiding interference. Plug it into the ONT directly to acts as a router, or plug it to the router in bridge mode.
