Just wondering if anyone has a list, or knows of a site which lists the wifi hotspots / access points in Wellington, NZ?

as I've recently purchased a HP Ipaq hx4700, and the only one I am aware of is Starbucks :o.

Cheers,

Torque

Congrats on your new Pocket PC... I don't think there's a central location with all locations.

You can try:

  • Cafenet (what I use)
  • Telecom NZ (as of 30 Dec 2004 you must be a Xtra user)
  • Reach Wireless (I've used while in Auckland, minor presence in Wellington).

  • Referral links: Quic Broadband (free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE) | Samsung | AliExpress | Wise | Sharesies

I take, for the locations, that this is a list of Telecom NZ hotspots?

yeah - good call - looks like a screen dump from Telecom.

check out www.dowza.com - a new locator that CafeNet and Reach subscribe to.

It's interesting that Cafenet have contracted an expansion into Nelson and Palmerston North. Hopefully, in due course, this will provide some competition for Telecom's network.

Following freitasm and aucklander2004 posts, I went at www.dowza.com as well and have to say that it looks nice and is so much faster than the one I used before:jiwire...

You can check out my website at The HotSpot Haven. We have 68 Hotspot Locations in Wellington Area. Here is the link:

    Wellington, NZ Hotspots

We also have a free to download application for finding wireless hotspots off-line. Its called SpotShadow and we have major upgrades coming soon, including Int'l versions and an auto-update mechanism.

Also, please disregard out total hotspot count. We will have closer to 40,000 listings worldwide once we finish this new back end data import system.

Can you please RATE/REVIEW any hotspots you visited for others to read up on?????

Thanks! And I hope the site is useful!

One of the problems with hotspot trackers and wifi community projects is that there are too many of them and it's generally uncoordinated. This is why something like Cafenet is a Good Idea - apart form maybe the pricing, which is too high for 'techie' as opposed to 'business' users.

This may belong in another thread (i.e. the CDMA one), but does anyone have current experience of Woosh in Wellington? I've not sorted out a broadband connection yet (I know Woosh is only 250kb/s, but it's broadband-a-like).

There are a few threads about Woosh. Check this one for a start.

I use it in wellington, but not much. Since I got a Harrier CDMA EV-DO Pocket PC Phone Edition I've been using that one as a Bluetooth connection for my Tablet PC. It averages 500Kbps, but the cost is much higher than Woosh. For business use though it makes sense, even more because of the coverage - 1xRTT almost everywhere in New Zealand and EV-DO in the main centres.
