Hi

Sorry for butting in on this thread, but hope someone can help???

I am using xp sp2, yes another sp2 problem. I use xp pro on my main pc and xp home on my laptop. (both sp2)

I have 2 dongles. (One I got today/ one ive had for a while). Both use Widcomm drivers (or should at least).

My old dongle only now works on the Microsoft driver since upgrading to sp2 though, not the Widcomm driver. The driver will change over (by updating the driver after its installed via device manager) but When using the widcomm driver for this dongle, it shows under "bluetooth devices" in device manager and doesn't work. If using it with the windows driver, it shows on device manager under "bluetooth radio" and will work.

As for the new dongle, it doesn't seem to have a microsoft driver, the Widcomm one automatically installs, but again shows on device manager under "bluetooth devices" and doesn't work. Its a ES-388 (can't see a brand)

I get the same error as everyone else using the Widcomms driver: If you go to control panel and try to access it there (click on bluetooth configuration), an alert box opens saying "bluetooth device not found". If you try and access it via the shortcut items, it then says "Your bluetooth software license does not include use of this bluetooth device" and opens a file (open) dialog box with the filename "license". On the driver cd there is a filename called "license". I have tried to open that but it doesn't work. If you try to access it from the shortcut on the desktop, nothing happens.

I have downloaded various Widcomm drivers from the web and have tried them but none seem to work, all give the same error. I can live with the old one using the microsoft driver, but would obviously like to get the new one working aswell. (if not, back to the store it goes I suppose)

Any ideas??????

Cheer Andrew

From what I've found in my own research on bluetooth dongles, SP2 is NOT what you want to be using with Bluetooth... unless the manufacturer specificially states that their USB dongle works with SP2, it's a good bet that it WON'T. That's why I still haven't bought one... and why I uninstalled SP2. Good ol' MSGarbage... :)

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

Ive read on many forums solutions which are meant to work with sp2 but they don't seem to. Ive actually downgraded on my laptop.

My older dongle works fine with it now but the new dongle still comes up with a licence problem (Your bluetooth software license does not include use of this bluetooth device).

I can only come to the conclusion that the drivers and software that come with the new dongle, simply aren't the right drivers.

Oh well, Ive boxed it and its going back to the shop.

Cheers
Andrew

I have a Sony usb bluetooth dongle (PCGA-BA1). I did the standard thing by installing the widcomm driver and then plugging in the dongle. Something seems to have gove wrong during the driver installation though. I cannot see the dongle listed in device driver, though windows does not recognize it as new hardware when plugging it in. When I force detection of new hardware using Control Panel\Add Hardware and say 'Yes, I've already connected this device" it shows the "Sony USB Device" in the list with a ? against it. It then gives me an error:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Can anyone help me remove this device so I can re-install or give me sme other solution?

Similar problem here. Installed a friend's BT adapter using Windows native drivers under XP Pro SP2, following instructions in this site article "Bluetooth ActiveSync Guide for Windows XP Service Pack 2." Worked great.

Bought my own BT adapter from a different manufacturer (TrendNet TBW-102UB). Windows didn't have a driver (apparently not even on Windows Update), so I had to insert the CD to load the (WIDCOMM) driver. But when I open "Bluetooth Devices" in Control Panel and click on the Hardware tab, no devices are listed.

How do I get Windows native "Bluetooth Devices" to hook into this driver?

Thanks for any tips!

Mark

Have you checked this article? Once you find the list you can swap the drivers...

Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately, I do not have the Generic USB Radio visible in my Device Manager (even after selecting Show Hidden Devices), so I can't update its driver.

Now that the WIDCOMM is installed, I can see my TrendNet is a Cambridge Silicon Radio, firmware version 525.

Anyway the WIDCOMM software seems to be working under SP2 so I guess I'll just go with that (even if it does seem more than what I need).

Thanks for your help,

I rather use the Widcomm drivers, simply because of this "more"... The Microsoft Bluetooth stack, even on SP2 is still very limited.

Do you know how to change the incoming COM port assignment in WidComm? The drop-down is only showing COM11, and I can't get ActiveSync to see it (though it did see COM9 when I had that working with my friend's adapter). I think the Windows driver allowed changing the COM port in Device Manager, but I don't see that option here.

It's not a problem with Widcomm drivers, but Windows. Check this thread.

That's great info! Thanks. I was able to delete all my extra ports (not to mention my MS Bluetooth Radio), and adding a COM port under My BT Places then came back as COM8. ActiveSync over BT is working! Also browsing the Internet from the phone via ActiveSync.

What I was referring to with the MS drivers was that under Device Manager, the Standard Serial over Bluetooth item has a Port Settings tab. When you click on Advanced, you can change the port number.

Well that's half the battle. Now if I can just untangle my DUN problems (that we've been discussing on the MS forum)...

Thanks again for all your help.

Mark
