I have 2 desktops one running VISTA Home premium and the other running XP.

The vista machine has a wireless connetion to internet, I have connected the second (XP) machine via an Ethernet cable through a 5port switch into the Vista machine and but them both in the same workgrp. I can ping the XP machine by name and ip from the vista machine but when I ping the vista machine by name it comes back with the address of the worless card rather than the static Ethernet card and times out. I have set up ICS on the vista wireless card but not sure how to configure the xp one to get it working.

Hope this makes sense – any help appreciated.

With ICS you don't have to configure anything on the client computer - just leave it with automatic configuration.

On the server computer (the one connected to the Internet) you have to configure ICS *from* the adapter connected to the Interet *to* the adapter your client will connect to.

Also note ICS will automatically configure the second adapter to its own address - again once you enable ICS you should not have to do any other configuration on the server.

What are you trying to achieve?

1.Allow XP to connect to the Internet via ICS
2.Allow XP to access resources/files on your Windows Vista machine

The next logical thing to look at is software firewalls - make sure there are rules in place to allow the communication...

Hi, thanks for this. I have disabled all firewalls. I can share files between the two machines but I can't access the web from the XP machine which is the client. I set up ICS on the wireless adapter on my Vista machine and recieved notification that it was going to change the IP address to a static address which is the same as my wireless router so I changed it so that it will still static but on a different address. The xp machine is connected to my vista machine via a simple 5 port switch, all cards are set in the same subnet and the same IP range but I when I load IE on the XP machine it just hangs and says page can not be displayed.

Whatever the address Windows put in there it must not be changed.

You have to change your router configuration.
