I've been looking at automating some roller blinds so researching this online. Found rollertrol seem to be reasonable and a little cheaper than somfy.

I emailed rollertrol they replied as follows. I'm preferring option 2 at the moment, any recommendations on a good zwave brand for NZ RF frequencies that is well priced and flexible? Needs to work with OpenHAB. Also links and price to said product?


You could go three different ways.

- Find a relay module that has 3 relays and works with OpenHab, and use it to trigger our group controller:

- Find a z-wave relay module (NZ frequency, ours only work in North America) that works with OpenHab and use with our group controller

The rollertol link indicates that it could be zigbee or bluetooth too, so that might open up more options for you if you can't find a z-wave solution.

 

I've not done it myself but have read a few posts in the Openhab community about controlling 433MHz devices via openhab using either HTTP or MQTT so that might be a preferrable option to adding z-wave relays into the mix.

You could look into using a little ESP8266 node (Wemos maybe?) with 3xrelays for controlling their relay trigger module. Looks to be a pretty cost effective option. Just wish I could get power to my blinds!

Excuse my ignorance but how does that work?  Am I right in saying that the 12V blind motor goes to the relay, the relay is controlled by an ESP8266 (Wifi), OpenHAB sends (arguably via MQTT) signals to the ESP which triggers the relay to open/close the blinds??

From my (albeit brief) look at their stuff, it looks like their relay trigger module is just a device which sends signals to their motor controllers via RF. You control which signals by signalling the 3 inputs via some external relays. Whether those relays are controlled by a Z-Wave device or RPi GPIOs or Arduino + relays seems up to you. I could well be wrong, but this seems like quite a good/open design and would be trivial to integrate with something like a Wemos. 

 

How you trigger those relays using openHAB would be up to you, but yes, MQTT would seem the logical choice. Using something like Homie (for ESP) makes this even more trivial!

I have a Vera3 ( as opposed to OpenHAB ) but just bought some TZ08 Z-wave controllers ( from Active Automation in AK ) and got the motors locally ( $130+GST each, they were 230V Acmeda ones ), they are working well....

 

You only need to make sure that you by the 4cm tubes on the blinds (which I got from KiwiBlinds in Wellington), it was pretty simple to remove the ends with the chain and replace with the motors.

@filboz - where did you source your Acmeda motors from? Did you retrofit to existing roller blinds, or get them installed along with new blinds?

Ah right I see.  So the "relay trigger module" is effectively just a "physical to RF" (via relay control) UP/DOWN/STOP device.  So that transmitter module is further controlled via a relay from pretty much any system you want (which supports turning on/off a relay) whether that be ZWave, Zigbee, RPi etc.  That does make it quite a nice open design.  I didn't like being tied down to a solution that had proprietary signalling like RTS from Somfy.  The only downside I can see with this particular module is it appears to be a "group" transmitter, so designed to operate all blinds connected via it in one go, rather than individually? Perhaps not that big of a deal anyhow.  I like the idea of custom building an ESP8266 with external relays, cheaper and something to do on a rainy day.  I've asked some more questions via email to the sales guy primarily about the group vs individual control.

I got the motors from a local guy in Wellington (PM me for his details), the blinds came from KiwiBlinds (Johnsonville, Wellington) they didn't know I was automating them.... Just make sure they come on the right tube....

 

On a sidenote, also I tried some DHS Controllers (from OZ, DHS-ZW-TMC-01) but they have stopped working with my Vera3, haven't had a chance to figure out why... they have a percentage up/down value, they ones I have now just open/close or go up/down manually.

Ok here is a blind from another room and I think it measures 38mm (ish), the motor (Acmeda S45) won't fit in this one, but there might be some that do...
