I got one of the original Amazon cases for the Kindle. It hooks to the Kindle using the holes on its left side - very clever, so you don't have anything rubbing your hands if you are holding like a book.

Just went to order a new Kindel from the international site but was put off by the 7-9 week shipping delay.

If I get a friend In the USA to order one they can have it delivered overnight within the USA. Then I can get it shipped to NZ hopefully well in time for Christmas.

So my real question is will I have any problems using a USA destined Kindle here in NZ? Is it worth paying for the 3G option? Looks like it uses Voda's 2100 network, or GPRS if you can bear it.

Thoughts?

No problems at all. What you are going to do is exactly what I did.

Ordered the Kindle DX, got it sent to a friend in US (I just added his address in my amazon account). He got it 24hrs later, then sent it on to me in a brown box which cost NZ$75.

He only put that there was $100 worth in it which was a risk regarding insurance if lost.

He sent it on a Friday, I received it the following Friday. Of course you will need to purchase the AUS/NZ adapter for it, unless you have an iphone usb power adapter which I do so I use that.

Definately worth paying for the 3G option imo, hell if for no other reason that to show off your Kindle to people when out and about, hehehe. Yes it uses Vodafone.

Yep. I orderd mine last month on a Sunday and got it here on Friday, same week. But then this is the hottest item selling on Amazon ever, and it's that time of the year...

No problems. Also if it's a micro USB like the new Kindle then you can use any USB wall charger.

The way I see it, the 3G is only used when buying books, and synchronising to another device. You won't leave it on all the time. Even though it's on Vodafone, if it fallsback to GPRS, no big deal. A full book is not more than 1MB, most of the times half of that so you will probably have no problems even on GPRS.

The 3G is convenient because if you run out of books you can easily buy and load others, from anywhere, without having to find a WiFi spot that works. Good for people who travel a lot.

As freitasm says, the 3G is only "essential" to those that see themselves "needing" to add/buy books or documents when away from a computer (you can email documents to your Kindle over 3G at 99c USD per Mb or something like that).

Otherwise it's a feature that will be turned off all the time (to save your battery) so pretty useless.

The added 3G is a nice feature to have in the back pocket but adds almost 50% to the price of the device - if it was only say $159 vs. $139 USD then it would be a harder call to make but at $189 vs. $139 it was a no-brainer for me personally.

This won't answer your question but I do know that the Kindle CANNOT connect to a WiFi network requiring proxy authentication.

Yes, it will.
I've had my wifi kindle using the wifi hotspot capability on my HTC Desire running a custom 2.2 ROM :)

I know this thread is probably a little old now but I have a question about the kindle.

I ordered one from Amazon today, got it sent to a place in the US that will send it to me, only problem is because I am having it delivered to a US address the US version is being sent.
Will this be a problem for using in NZ? I ordered the Wifi + 3G one and am thinking I jsut wasted money on 3G when it prob can't be used in NZ.
I have searched a lot for info but can't really find much that helps.
