MikeB4: I am seeking recommendations for automatic coffee machines. Due to my hand issues I am unable to use the more labour intensive machines. I currently have a Nespresso machine but I am unhappy using it due to the environment impact.
What do the coffee geeks recommend?

Use the nespresso! Good on you for considering the environment but I think you need to consider yourself too.

I like my cheapo Dulce Gusto from the supermarket. But then I only drink hot chocolate, so I can't vouch for the quality of the coffee :)

+1 for Nespresso.

Sure, they're slightly more expensive to use their capsules but they do make pretty good coffee. I just buy the recycling bags (I believe they're $2) and drop them into the post shop when filled.

Can I recommend Nespresso? They already offer recycling of their pods, or you can go aftermarket to get compostable/biodegradable pods. What part of their environmental impact are you unhappy with?

I do have a Nespresso, I didn't like the idea of all the plastic pods in the environment. I did not realize that these can be recycled, does one take the used pods yo the Nespresso shop?

Any of the Nespresso shops (here in ChCh I go to the one in Ballantynes as it's near my place of work) you can buy, for very cheap (from memory a dollar fifty?), a pre-paid recycling bag which you then fill and just drop if off at the counter of your nearest post shop. Easy peasy!

Ever considered reusable capsules? The only part you have to throw away is the small aluminium foil lid- the capsule itself is made of stainless steel and resusable.

Breville BES870 all in one Grinder and Expresso. It seems to do well in Consumer tests and works just fine. Just watch the price It is usually advertised around the $1200 mark but is reduced to half that at Briscopes and Farmers and N oel Leeming for theri sales. Seems to be the common method of selling now days double the price then offer 50-60% off for sale days

If Im going to the effort of grinding etc I would just do it in the traditional machine rather than a nespresso. I really dont see the point in the reusable ones. I did get one for the dolche gusto to try out, but it was too much work to save under a dollar, and no point pre-grinding and filling a whole lot because without the inert gas and a seal they end up as bad as preground stuff does sitting around.

I love the coffee aroma the beans put in the kitchen. Just don't get that with Nespresso. Another bonus is coffee grounds are good for the garden.

With regards to the auto ones, we have a DeLonghi Dinamica(now discontinued) and absolutely love it. Looks similar to the Eletta Cappucino.

Real quick warm up time, great coffee and gets used almost every day.

I gave my Nespresso machine to my son which he uses in his University dorm room. I'm not a big fan of espresso coffee as I prefer filter coffee. So I've got myself a Keurig machine which I can grind my own beans and use refillable capsules. And the used coffee grounds can be thrown in the compost.

How good is the milk side of the fully automatic Delonghis? Some of the promo material talks about “frothing” the milk which is all a bit 1990s cappuccino-like.

I recently returned a cheap Delonghi manual espresso machine that I bought to use at work; the coffee itself was ok given the price point, but the milk heating was a joke (and dangerous to boot). It came with this weird sleeve that sat over the wand, the job apparently being to make as many large bubbles of air as possible - more macrofoam than microfoam, that’s for sure! Getting rid of the sleeve made it slightly better but always made big bubbles of air rather than texturizing the milk. I see many of their manual models use this system, which makes me worry about their general ability to make a decent job of it if that’s what they think is a good milk-heating system.

+1 for Delonghi Magnifica beans to cup machine I have had one since 2010 and it's still going strong. Makes fantastic coffee every time, at the push of a button, and extremely cheap ongoing costs. Just beans and the occasional descaler. Best kitchen machine I have ever bought. They are expensive in NZ though, look out for them when on sale.

which model do you have and recommend?

A google search brings up 2 models of the magnifica.

We have the Delonghi Nespresso machine with the square milk tank. It works really well and I like that the milk tank can be detached and stored in the fridge between uses. Makes better frothed milk than I can make by myself

I managed to track down a spare milk tank so the girls have their yellow top milk and I have full cream

Nespresso supply postage-paid recycling bags that can be handed over the counter at any NZ Post Shop or a recycling agents. As an example there are three recycling agents in the Nelson region - all are florists. Perhaps it's a 'back-load' for the local flower distributors.
