I use the Netatmo system with an additional indoor module, rain gauge and anemometer. Combined though it might be a bit more than you’re looking to spend, but it’s a good system and works well and does everything you’re wanting to do. I’ve had it for over a year and batteries are still showing as full.

This kind of peaked my interest in a weather station again. I note from searching online that it can be integrated with Google Assistant and Alexa (and IFTTT) as well as Smartthings, HomeKit, Openhab and HomeAssistant. Have you explored any of these integrations?

I’ve got it as part of HomeKit but I don’t have the system as part of any automations though. The rain gauge and wind gauge aren’t supported in HomeKit but that’s to do with with the HomeKit API not the Netatmo system.

You can use the Air Quality and CO2 readings to set up automations in HomeKit.

At this early stage of looking at the above, looks ok for the money. Only concern, not NZ based supplier and not a known brand. But as has been mentioned probably made at same factory as similar looking models. Will have to ask about the DST issue mentioned by sbiddle.

The tempest looks very nice

The seller has come back and said if you set location right the time should be right.

these are rebadged Fine Offset units and surprisingly good. ( a number of Ambient Weather stations are also rebadged Fine Offsett units)
I have the earlier model and been using it for a couple of years.
The newer model that you linked to has some dampening added to the wind vane to increase its accuracy in light winds.

The viewing angle on the screen isn't the best - but I mostly use the app on my phone anyway.
I feed my weather to WOW/Metservice, Wunderground, PWS Weather, Ecowitt and also Weathercloud (all handled from within the unit)

Reading the fine offset manual, it only mentions +12 and -12 http://www.foshk.com/upload/manual/WH2900manual.pdf

A strong argument against a wired system is that you're going to stick it up/out on an exposed position and then run an electrical connection from it into your internal house network, which is not a good idea. I've got all my external exposed gear either wireless or isolated via a fibre optic link, no electrical path from sticking-up-in-the-air points to internal systems.

And the issue won't happen in Aussie anyway (or anywhere in the world actually except GMT+12 and GMT+13 countries) since Aussie is GMT+8, GMT+9.5 and GMT+10 so you can manually add an hour to these timezones. The problem is because GMT+12 is the maximum you can't add +1 to GMT+12 when NZ becomes GMT+13 in NZDT, nor can you use it at all in any country that's GMT+13 or Chatham's which is GMT+12:45

There's quite a discussion on these weather stations (Pantech wh2900) on this thread https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/360ryqx3?p=72. I believe the time zone issue is fixed by registering on ecowit.net For example

"Well I just put my location into Ecowitt.net and it synced the time straight away.
This was last December when I got it and it had DST above the time display on the unit. When we changed back to standard time last weekend DST disappeared off the display and the time moved back 1 hour. I'm in SA btw. I've done nothing else except to keep the firmware up to date via WSview, v1.4.9 at the moment"

That's no problem with appropriate transient suppression devices ($$$), earthing and correct wiring layout, but that's all a bit too much for your average DIYer to get right.

It would be great not worrying about a lack of power to the components and flakey radio comms though.

From what I've seen of most home weather stations they're erected for convenience and are nowhere near the highest part of the attached structure. This is good for reducing lightning risk but worse for increasing the effect of the building on the measurements.

I've gotten over the "can't wait for it to arrive" syndrome now.

Yeah - I am waiting on a Tempest as well... At this point I haven't quite written it off - but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it does turn up. Looks really interesting...

With a decent-quality station it's no problem, I've got a ~10-year-old Davis which is powered off solar+supercaps and a backup lithium battery which runs, after a supercap upgrade from 10F or whatever it was to 70F, solely off solar, I've never had to change the battery. It's really not a concern.
