Senecio:

I think you misread the post. He's saying that when his car's speedo is indicating 100km/h, he's only actually travelling at 96km/h

Ah good point. Figured that over reading was fairly common, so I don't see how a radar really helps in that regard. I mean if it says you're doing 105kmh on your speedo then that's your margin of error. I mean phones give you that data now, so do plenty of those Your Speed Signs.

That said I think we all know why people buy radars, I haven't really kept up with it. An old boss who had every supercar under the sun would change radars every few years. I presume in response to different detection requirements and most often false alarms.

If you need to speed (break the law) to get past someone, then they weren't going that slow then, were they? Funny way to say you are impatient.

there's a big group of people around that drive at 70-80km/hr and then when they see a passing lane they drive at 110km/hr, consistently without fail

they must have an alternative road code they follow

Insanekiwi: I am looking to move on my Escort Redline EX international as I don’t drive much any more. Let me know if you are interested. GPS / Bluetooth / and great radar overall.

NZ new and comes with evening including the box. Almost new condition.

Appreciate that, will do my homework on things.

Been a loooong time since i was doing product checks as the STI served me so well

As a non-detector user who now drives a GPS-tracked and monitored company vehicle, I don't keep up with the play, but back when I had my own car I recall looking into a radar detector and reading a lot about false alarms and it being quite annoying.
I assume the tech has gotten a lot better in the last few years and there's less of thst going on?

I purchased my Uniden R7NZ early last year. Was brilliant and has a great range. Saved me many times.. again just to keep me safe when I have to overtake some slow traffic. I recommend NZRadars (Here) whole heartedly. NZ Configurations for all the Radars and great support if needed.

Edit: Radar Detectors will read 3 - 5 Kmh under your car speedo, but police radars will also catch your car going under what your speedo says so it's nothing to worry about. If you do get pulled over and they mention they caught you with laser then you're in for a hard time.

My wife used to use a detector when she was travelling around the motu for business. I asked her about her experiences with them last evening and her executive summary (abridged) was they were useless or words to that extend (insert expletives of choice). She stopped using them and uses the cruise control now. She figures it's already paid for and installed.

Batman:

how do you guys deal with off -> on laser?

i'm told the detector sees nothing as the laser is off, and then when it's fired it's too late

Yeah if you've been caught by laser it is indeed too late.

This is indeed the case, and something to accept.

The STI magnum i have is only flaking now due to fault.  and that's only come about because its been dropped. prior it was bullet proof.

@MikeB4

If i may ask, what was she using?

I drive 20-30km/h under the speed limit everywhere I go. I find this stops me getting tickets and I make a lot of "Road Friends" because many people beep, flash their lights and wave/give hand signals to me.

Try it!

I have had a Valentine for years that still works pretty well. I get occasional laser alerts on it but that is easy to deactivate if it becomes an issue.

My own experience has been that the detector has actually improved my driving. I know people will jump on that but I don't care. It happens to be true. I do not consciously try to speed but it can creep up. The detector gives me alerts for automatic doors and burglar alarms and other devices that share the K and Ka bands and these always cause me to glance at the speedo. It is a useful reminder.

My wife had a similar issue. When she had been on the road all day she found as she got more fatigued she would find her speed would creep up. She is an excellent driver but found that  even after taking breaks her speed would creep up and that's why she got the radar detector but found using the cruise control was more effective at keeping her speed legal.

I find the waze app makes it unnecessary to own a radar detector, at least in Aus anyway. It always surprises me how quickly police are reported.

Would radar detectors not go berserk at traffic lights where they have permanent red light cameras, or at the permanent speed cameras? Possibly still useful on the long inter-city highway trips though.

Qazzy03:

FTFY, I am no saint and I have momemtarily exceed the speed limit when passing however this is always a choice, not a need.

That depends if you believe in free-will or an entirely deterministic universe.

Existential questions aside, sometimes it's inattention.  I've had one ticket in the last ~10 years.  I had the car on cruise control (ironically, to avoid speeding) and it coasted over the limit while going downhill.

It's debatable whether inattention to the speedo is within the scope of free-will, but it certainly wasn't a conscious decision.  His majesty's constabulary certainly weren't buying my excuse on that day.

The next car I buy (a newer Mazda 3) will have adaptive cruise control.

I'm also a big fan of Waze, started using it ass all our guys in Aus are users and it's pretty good for traffic reports there.  getting bigger here in NZ which is great to see
