My second replacement arrived on Saturday (8 days to ship from Florida to NZ rural address via UPS). It's working correctly at the moment, however the RSSI reading has gradually worsened from -80 to -87 over the last couple of days (Was consistently -77 on the previous station). Unfortunately the RSSI reading is not stored in a visible history table so I can't see if the decline has been steady or not. Fingers crossed that it keeps on working.

Friend of mine tried to order one and their web site says only taking orders from the US and Canada, is this a new thing or is there a secret handshake that folks here are using to get one?

Those of us who have one received an email from them inviting us to buy one through a special link to their online shop. Tell your friend to sign up to be notified when shipping to NZ is available and maybe they’ll receive the same email invite.

He's already signed up, it just sounded from the comments on here that it should be easier than that.

No that was pretty much it, sign up to be notified and wait and see if you get an email invite.

I’m back in business with my replacement Tempest, four days in so far and it’s been working well.

2m pole, sits about 3.3m from the ground.

@Stu we can compare stations now!

How are you finding the reliability the wind direction readings?

I've gone mine about 2.8m high off the ground in the back yard but the issue I've got is we're at the foot of the hill range between Wainuiomata and Eastbourne and the housing here incl mine is the old 1960s style with the high pitched roofs.

It seems to detect a Southerly fine even with the hill in the way but when the wind is up and from the North-West, North, North-East directions when looking at Weather Underground the direction readings are a bit scattered.

I'm tempted to pop down to bunnings and grab a 1.4m Antenna Pole (its currently on a 60cm one) and seeing if lifting up further helps this. I'm just conscious there are Council regs out there on how high something can be mounted also.

With the previous Tempest it was on a 1m pole and about 2.5m off the ground. We had some southwesterly winds that felt stronger than it was reading, and our neighbour is directly in that position behind the station so I feel like it was blocking the winds a bit.

We don’t have a perfectly clean fetch at our place anyway but raising it about an extra 80cm certainly seems to have helped a bit.

Likewise, neighbouring houses are bouncing and deflecting wind, but with the station at only around 3m(ish) iffy ground, I'm expecting that. I plan on eventually using some galv pipe (about 2-2.5m) but have no way of transporting it at the moment. Maybe next year. I'm not in any hurry.

Today is one of those days which shows the weakness of the haptic rain sensor:

The humidity level is very high with a lot of low cloud currently so there is a lot of that mist like drizzle presently, its wet enough to saturate everything outside.

Currently the Tempest says there has been no rain at all.

Ah, interesting point! For those outside Orkland, we've had ongoing very pleasant light rain all day, about 1mm/hr for at least 24 hours, but it's so light that I could see a haptic sensor wouldn't register much unless it was sensitive enough to also mis-register sudden wind gusts and similar sudden pressure points as rain.

Technically that’s correct though isn’t it? No rain has fallen so it’s not registered anything? I used to have the opposite problem with Netatmo. On days of fog, the dew would drop down into the rain gauge and it would record it as 0.1-0.2mm of rain, which obviously wasn’t correct.

There are good thunderstorms over Auckland, Waikato and BOP currently, how are those of you with Tempests getting on with Lightning detection?

Ten strikes recorded in the last three hours for us, closest has been in the 9-13km range. The accuracy seems pretty good based on the level of thunderstorm activity in our vicinity (Pokeno).
