So, thanks to Black Friday sales I have a Google Home & Google Home Mini on the way to my Shipito address in California so I can dip my toe in the home assistant arena. I'm not looking at setting up stuff throughout the house but I might get a smart LED bulb for my room to play with voice activated lights. What would be the best option for a single WiFi bulb in a house?

I have a Mitsubishi heat pump with WiFi which I control with this laptop, is there any way of controlling it with Google Home?

The sonoff B1 lamp has good cool to warm white varying, but useless RGB, the arilux has very powerful RGB leds in it, but pretty bad attempt at warm white by adding some red to the cool white LEDs.

Otherwise you are looking at spending a hell of a lot more on things like the hues, which need a base and the NZ available gen 2 ones have trash colours, and gen 3 is something that philips NZ are pretending doesnt exist so they can keep peddling overpriced obsolete stuff here like its the 1980's still.

There are some very nice xiaomi lamps, but no home or alexa integration yet from them.

Check out LifX bulbs...no hub required and better colour range and brighter than the Hue

Ive also ordered these ones on ebay because they have a b22 option which I have not seen on aliexpress which has largly replaced ebay for me recently https://www.ebay.com/itm/132401270934 - will see which they are when they arrive. Hope they are the high powered RGB ones and not the feeble 4 5050 sized LED sonoff ones.

For my Google Home and other Black Friday purchases I found some USB power wall adaptors with AU/NZ wall pins.
Good build quality & nice and safe.
I purchased these from Deal Extreme.

I've purchased them before and the work fine.
No need for messy adaptors

They are 5V 2A. Only $3.43 shipped ea

For another $US1.50 you can pick up a USB to USB micro cable at the same time from Deal Extreme.

Has anyone opened one of those knockoff Samsung USB adapters to see if they are ok tho? Don't want to end up with something that is dodgey like a lot of the stuff big Clive rips apart.

I've got so many USB adaptors lying around it is ridiculous.

It is really handy being able to use the one device to charge my cellphone, tablet, another cellphone & a couple of power banks - all at once.

I've got one of the Xiaomi Yeelight RGB bulbs in a lamp and it works with the Google Assistant on my phone so I assume it works with the Google Home. It definitely wasn't easy to set up though. Yeelight doesn't appear in the list of devices you can set up from the Google Home app but I managed to figure out a way and now I can turn the lamp on and off, change the colour of the bulb, and set the brightness all with my voice. The only thing about the Yeelight though is I'm not sure how secure they are so I've put it on my guest wifi network in the hopes of mitigating any damage but I'm not really a network security wiz so I might have to do some more research.

I've been trying to think of what I could automate that would actually be useful (rather than just automate for the sake of it) and I've thought of one thing I'd really like to setup - my car charger. I've ordered a Sonoff WiFi relay that measures power throughput and handles up to 16A (3500W) for a cost of under NZ$15. I figure I could schedule charging and monitor the power flow to see when it's finished. I usually just plug it in when I get home from work and unplug it in the morning before leaving for work, but on Friday I prefer not to charge it and leave it at 100% until Monday so if I'm not going anywhere on the weekend I plug it in on Sunday instead. If I forget to plug my car in on Sunday it could be a problem when I go to work on Monday, it would be better to schedule the charger to turn on and be able to check that there is power flowing from my phone or computer.

I know I could use the car's timer charger, but I'd prefer to also be able to check power throughput and there is also the ability to decide to turn on charging on Saturday if I decide I'm going to go out in the car on Sunday.

Do not put 16A thru the 16A sonoff. Loads of posts of them burning out on way less than that. Usually the absurd to put inside one fuse that causes it from the pics I have seen.

Yeah, I'd only go up to 10A at the most. I have a charger that can set the rate from 6A - 16A. I haven't used more than 10A yet, would only use 16A if using a caravan plug.

You can now, the yeelights work with home, and they are only like $20 US from aliexpress each. There is a slight delay as im guessing it hits the Singapore server but its fine.
