I just noticed something strange with my GH that I have had for almost a year now. I've always had the language set to US English as the voice is quiet pleasant.

Then today I noticed when asking about the weather, and no matter what location, the voice is an Australian!  But for all other requests the voice is the aforementioned US female. That is strange. Anybody else notice this?

Yep - this started several days ago for our weather forecasts too, although everything else is US voice. Hopefully it's not an automatic localisation thing that's going to override other options, because that Australian accent is definitely a bit grating.

Of all the voices they could have chosen,  they give us this awful Aussie accent :-(  Or maybe it's fine to an Aussie!

Am a bit late to the band wagon.

I'm wanting a Google home and a Google home mini or two. Its for use with home assistant.

Are there any good deals still going at the moment ? (Presumably shipped via youshop).

Thanks

Yes please. Any expiring vouchers send them this way. I would be extremely appreciative.

Just as a little extra. It's possible to make your own Google home using a rasp pi zero w ($10) and a speaker and mic.

Does anyone know a way to get VOIP calling going on the Google home in NZ. Looks like I can use Tasker to send text messages with a bit of setup but been playing and wondering about voice calling going outside of the USA.

I have charged my car twice with the power flowing through the Sonoff controller. That entailed 10A flowing for around 7 hours each time, I checked the device and cord and found they were warm, but nothing burned out or smoked. The power metering seems pretty good and quite useful, letting me see how many kWh is needed to charge my car after 70km of driving.

Well, I've now had my first failure - but it wasn't the NZ$14 Sonoff switch!

The female socket from the heavy duty power cord has had some overheating on the phase pin and now the power isn't getting through it.  I've bought a new extra heavy duty extension cord with a better female plug and wired it up to the Sonoff and gotten it working.  The 1.5mm wiring works fine with the Sonoff.  I've also set my car charger to 8A instead of 10A as there is plenty of time to charge the car after getting home from work before needing to leave the next morning.

It has occurred to me that I could put a female caravan plug on the Sonoff as my car charger is using an adaptor to plug into a standard domestic socket and without that adaptor in place can use the higher rated caravan socket.  I'll probably go this way if I have a problem with the socket again.

I'm really impressed with the ability of this cheap Sonoff power measuring switch to handle 10A load for ~7 hours at a time for the last 5 weeks, great value for the price. https://www.banggood.com/SONOFF-POW-DIY-WIFI-Long-Distance-Power-Monitor-Current-Tester-Remote-Control-Switch-Socket-For-Smart-Home-p-1123797.html?rmmds=myorder&cur_warehouse=CN I also have one of these on a hot water cylinder under the house that we want to be able to turn on/off without crawling under there with the dirt and the spider's webs.  I'm using the timer & schedule functions on the app to run the car charger for ~4 hours when I get home on Friday and then to turn on Sunday afternoon to finish the charge ready for Monday morning.

Hey guys

Ive not had a chance to read through all this thread, just found it today & its kinda massive!

Im wondering about any issues with getting this through youshop??

Story is, I bought a combo deal from an online store in the UK, philips hue B22 starter kit + google home. The store shipped it onto Youshop UK no issue. Took a while for Youshop to process it, Then I got an email saying that ive bought a prohibited item, that I need to provide my invoice & the MSDS Sheets for my purchases. .

well, umm?

Has anyone run into this? I contacted the store about this & they dont have MSDSD sheets on these items. I found a generic sheet for Philips LED bulbs

I spoke to a helpful lady at Youshop NZ, she is investigating but not heard back for a bit. Youshop UK didnt give any reason, which says is odd, as she says they have to state WHY they wont ship an item.

Has everyone else bought there unit only from USA? Surely its not the Philips Hue kit that theyre flagging, I figured it had to be the google home, as I searched online & come across other people asking for MSDS on GH also but no one is able to get one, not sure what others did.

pedrogarcia: I'll keep my Echo thanks - at least I know it works well in NZ

Looking at getting Morepork when we move, seems to be pretty ideal for what we want as it's straightforward.

I know that Echo works with it, through alarm.com I guess but does anyone know if the same goes for Google Home? Morepork support say no it doesn't but surely if going through alarm.com it would be no different to Echo?

on DSE website Home is $60 cheaper than Echo, would probably grab two instead of a mini

Looking at buying Google Home for a vision impaired family member but have a few specific questions before purchase and have no desire to skim through 24 pages going back 2 years.

  1. Does the Phone Call option work in NZ?
  2. Is it able to play local audio files?. I want G.H to play my dads mp3 bible on command without sub'ing to Google Music.
  3. If #2 is no has anyone tried using G.H to play mp3 files from there Google Drive?(quick Google search indicates it can be done).
  4. G.H now has "YouVersion" bible service added. Can someone confirm it's working in NZ.
  5. Radio stations play ok? ie. audio command to play Radio Live, Radio Sport, ZB etc...
