I've also got a Ecowitt setup, there latest Tempest style one which is similar to the tempest. The model is the Wittboy or WS90 + GW2001, 7 in one sensor platform (https://www.ecowitt.com/shop/goodsDetail/245) works fairly well and feeds into Home assistant (with some work and a couple of minor bugs) plus various online services fairly easy. With regards to accuracy you need to calibrate the pressure sensor (absolute by default rather than relative), and the rainfall is +- 10% if the other sensors within 4-5km (probably around middle of the pack).

You can see data feed from one here, and if you zoom out on the wonder map you'll see a pile of other PWS you can compare the output to...

For those who have had to return their Tempest back to the US, did you have any problems?

I went to my local post office today. Three people behind the counter couldn't decide on whether the battery counts as a Lithium battery (apparently it's a Lithium-titanate), eventually they settled on it being Lithium resulting in extra paperwork. I wasn't able to send it as it can't just be addressed to the company, it has to have a person's name and phone number on the address label, it has to be sent via the most expensive method ($185), and the paperwork has to state I'm exporting batteries overseas rather than just returning a dud piece of equipment that no longer works.

Nope - prepackaged, put "Weather Station" on the customs deceleration and didn't even mention the battery (never crossed my mind at all). As soon as you mention "Lithium" often people won't understand. Best not to mention it at all because it isn't the Lithium they're thinking about regardless or a restricted export.

I sent the cheapest way - think it was around $30 from memory and all was well and good.

How low can the Tempest Battery go before problems start?

I'm currently sitting at 2.48v, weather over the past few days has been dull enough that it hasn't received much (if any) direct sunlight. Kinda wishing they included a small USB port to top it up with an external charger.

The station somehow disconnected from the hub overnight and only way to get it going again was to re-pair it with the hub via the app, hoping Weatherflow can marry up the old data as it no longer shows historic data

Has your battery been slowly discharging and not charging at all? That's what happened to my previous one, just stopped charging and slowly discharged until things stopped working. For me it was when it got to about 2.42v that the first sensor was degraded. I think the wind sampling timeframe increased, then shortly after that the rain sensor cut out.

WeatherFlow do actually make an external battery booster that's fairly new, mostly designed for the northern hemisphere winters where the sun hardly shines at times, but that could still be an option.

It does charge up a bit when the Sun comes out but we've not had enough of late to bring it up to full charge.

I'll monitor it tomorrow to see if it charges up at all

As long as it's still charging when you get some sun you should be ok. It definitely is getting low but you will be ok until/unless you get to 2.44v. This page has a bit of info around the battery levels:

Mine has been on 2.3? for a few days, causing a bit of missed data.

Relocated it to a more exposed location for what ever sunlight filters thru the clouds, has now gone to 2.44 & transmitting ok again.

Some other way of charging in winter gloomy days would be nice.

Been keeping an eye on it all morning and been sitting at 2.45v, a bit of sun managed to get through the cloud and it quickly went up to 2.46v. I'm tempted to put it down to just lack of cloudless sky in the past days
