Just got my Shellies, I order a dimmer, 3 of the shelly 2.5s in anticipation of certification.

Is it as simple as writing your own SDOC for the 1PM?
I told my sparky, who freaked out and said I needed something from "the commerce comssion" before he installs them on my new house build.

Facepalm...

No, you do not need to write your own SDOC. That is a declaration made by suppliers or local manufacturers which pretty much just cites the certification document.

"Low Voltage" in the electrical regulations is stated "means any voltage exceeding 50 volts AC or 120 volts ripple-free DC but not exceeding 1 000 volts AC or 1 500 volts ripple-free DC" so the MRA looks like it would cover that.

Your sparky won't/shouldn't install the dimmer as they don't have an SDOC yet.

...but frankly I think that's kind of dumb considering their devices meet european standards.

I think their interpretation of the MRU is wrong. The MRU allows testing for NZ products to be completed in the EU. They still have to be performed by an accredited lab and be tests to the relevant NZAS. Just because a device is compliant in the EU doesn't automatically give it compliance in NZ.

They establish that products that are tested or certified to meet the requirements of the destination market can be assessed in the market of manufacture.

Edit: Unless they can provide a SoC or CoS with testing to the relevant NZAS I wouldn't trust it.

Yeah Im going to be the "importer" as my contracting company, so will write up the sDOC to keep the sparky happy, but the 2.5s and dimmer will remain uninstalled pending the certification which is underway, just means I will add them later for a small fee.

The change to CoAP is the big one, apparently the ShellyforHASS developers are working on updating the plugin to support the new protocol but no timing has been given yet.

I got my first Shelly setup today, in preparation for installation.

My long-term plan is a more DIY approach, using DIN relays and SBCs with GPIO, but the Shelly is more suited to retrofitting. The Detached Switch mode Shelly offers essentially allows me to use it in the same way my own code works, just with more annoying naming of MQTT topics.

On the subject of MQTT, the documentation could do with specifying data types... it seems they use strings "0" (0x30) and "1" (0x31) instead of integers to represent switch states, and strings "off" and "on" as control signals. Other than that annoyance (and my own hate for JavaScript as I'm using NodeRED still), I'm quite impressed with the units.

You can buy from him or direct from Shelly however note that only the Shelly 1 and Shelly 1PM are certified for NZ so far. Everyone is waiting for more devices such as the Dimmer 2 to meet Au/NZ certification before installing those ones.
