Perhaps @sbiddle will know why... I have a six port Anker wall charger... I've used it with our smartphones and always charged quickly - using their original cables. 

 

Decided to buy a couple of Anker braided cables and now those same smartphone will charge very slowly - sometimes so slowly that it actually depletes the battery instead.

 

Any ideas?

USB-C or micro USB phones?

 

I don't have any Anker braided cables and have never used them.

 

What model charger do you have? One of the newer ones with QC or an old one without it?

I've contacted Anker support, they think these cables should charge ("Powerline" models). Anyway they offered to collect the cables, refund me and check with the phone models why is not working (two Huawei, one Nokia). Let's see what happens next.

 

Back using the original rubber cables, which charge the phones in record time.

Do you have any way of checking how the cables are wired? Specifically, can you check whether there's an oddball pullup resistor value being used that would cause either end to limit the current to 0.5A? Do you have a USB power meter that shows the charge voltage and current?

@neb no, I don't have how to test

 

@sbiddle I tested with two Anker wall chargers (IQ and PD enabled versions), plus original Huawei and Nokia wall chargers. All three cables basically don't work - the phones show "charging" but it's so slow they end up with 5% after one night. If they charge fast enough (occasionally they do) the phones would show 60% charge after a night - using the original cables the phones would all charge to 100% in a matter of 60 minutes or so.

If you're ditching the cables then post one to me and I'll test it for you if you like, I assume it can be crammed into a 1 or 2-stamp envelope.

 

 

Just as an FYI, I've been using Anker cables and chargers for ages and they work fine, including putting out QC 2 9V power (which makes my USB power meter panic, it may also go to 12V but the meter won't show that). If it's an older Anker they may only have one QC port, the top one, are you using that?

Collected the Aukey cable and sure enough, the phone charged really fast, as expected, from any port on the charger. Will be returning the Anker cables and ordering Aukey replacements.
