Hi guys,

soo soo close to purchasing an Iphone 3GS (my first iphone), then i read about them rattling because of a possible fault
in the camera focus.

Can people who have purchased one confirm if they have this problem? or not?

Thanks

Greg

No problem here, although I thought the camera focus was software based not hardware based?

Cheers

Make your purchase, you won't regret it. That kind of thing would be covered by the warranty anyway.

You have to tap the phone to hear it..

TBH thats the location of the power switch/mute switch/sim card... I'm guessing its the sim card rattling as it's not a snug fit..

I don't think its US phones, it's any phone with an autofocus camera. And if you're just shaking your phone and hear no rattle then you need to tap it near the camera as per the video and you'll hear it. If I tap my iphone near the camera I hear it, if I shake my phone I don't. Given I don't spend my time tapping the phone it's really a non issue.

If you do the same tapping while the camera is on and tap the screen to focus the rattle stops for a split second while it adjusts.. hardly a fault it's just normal behavior as far as I'm concerned.

I have the rattle problem. Whether or not its the auto focus is debateable.

If I shake the phone definate rattle - If I hold the sound on off switch I only get the rattle when tapping the camera which some people mentioned.

Whilst I can put up with the rattle the whole phone sounds like its about to become airbourne when it's vibrating...

Could somebody else with a 3GS please to a shake test for me? I wonder if its worth going for a replacement?

Cheers..

Mine doesn't rattle when I shake it, only when I tap it. It's definitely the autofocus on the camera. If you load the camera app then tap the screen to focus then tap the phone the noise will momentarily stop while the camera is focusing.

I've tried tapping other phones with auto focus camera's and they all make noises. My work colleagues iPhone makes the same noise.

It's a non issue as far as I'm concerned, though I was thinking about it this morning and given the noise stops when the camera is focusing perhaps an apple update could move the lense into a position where it doesnt move but the likelyhood of that is slim to none.

I only get the death rattle when the volume is turned off - The switch is definately loose on my phone, the autofocus seems to be a different issue!!

Oh well we'll see what Apple says i spose ;-/

Cheers.

My 3G rattled really badly. Sent it to vodafone and they responded, 'it is normal for the phone to rattle'. Yeah, because apple would release a product that rattles out of the box. If they wanted it to rattle, there would be a Rattle.app :)

it isnt normal for a phone to rattle, if even one person has a 3GS that doesnt rattle - it means none should really.....

the annoying thing is how hard these are to come by here in NZ and how long it takes to get one, otherwise you could just get your money back and then buy a new one elsewhere hoping for no rattle
