stevenz:FWIW Canadian prices work out to be only around 5% less gougy relative to NZ.

The on line apple store in Canada does not include Tax, as this will vary depending on which province you live (different provincial sales taxs)

Sorry to go nuclear, but the "we are getting ripped off by apple thread" does tend to get resurrected every year,
and in general most of the difference can be attributed to differing tax rates in different parts of the world ( and the fact that apple advertises prices as excl. tax in some countries and including tax in others)

And in the real world, this is what the cost differences are by my calculations.  It assumes that you would purchase one in the US while over there and bring it back with you, avoiding shipping charges and other Customs import charges (other than GST which you cannot guarantee to avoid, therefore you have to budget for it).

So the cost differences are negligible.  What am I missing?

^This is a much more reasonable translation of costs.

I guess if you stayed in the states and used your phone until it's a used condition and then brought it back you'd save gst?

And from Vodafone:

Vodafone New Zealand today announced it will offer iPhone 5s, the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, and iPhone 5c, the most colourful iPhone yet, to customers beginning on 25 October. For more information please visit: www.vodafone.co.nz

The text from both operators must have been standard quote mandated by Apple...

Or some other equally crazy PR department
"most forward-thinking smartphone in the world"
I mean what were they smoking when they came up with that phrase,  at least colourful actually means something :)

Demeter: Yep, Vodafone will be carrying the 5S and 5C as of the 25th of October.  http://www.vodafone.co.nz/iphone5s/

My girlfriend was contacted by VF about a month ago as her contract had just expired and they wanted her to sign back up with the carrot of a $800 credit on a new handset.  She told them she would like to wait for the iPhone 5S to be released.  They rightly told her at the time they had no idea when that would be and her credit was valid for 3 months only.  She decided to wait.

Fast forward to yesterday when VF put out a press release saying that the 5S and 5C will be available with them from 25 October.  She rang VF to see if they knew yet what the process was to upgrade or when she might be able to get the process in motion as we will be in Sydney on 25 October.  The CS officer she spoke to did not have any record of the $800 credit offer to her, and said that the iPhone 5S won't be released for another year!  She then got put through to "sales" who told her that the iPhone 5S will initially only be available to customers on pre pay.  She gave up at this point (she had no other option).

I know the release date was only just made available to VF and others, but surely front line staff would have been given a little bit of info regarding the announcement at least?  Being told it was a year away is appalling.  I may expect this from the average Joe who may not read the papers etc, but for a person who's job is at a telco, and the company having already made an announcement on the subject, I expected slightly better than this.  I accept that VF may not have the process ready for public consumption yet, but that is not the issue.

Do any of the VF people on here know and can say what the process is yet?  If there is a waiting list or register of interest, she'd like to get on it asap.  Also what's with the pre pay only comment?

Cheers.

Hi Satch - sounds like a pretty poor experience, sorry about that. Not sure what's with the inaccurate information... I would really like to follow up on this if you don't mind. Could you please private message your customer account details to me so I can look into this further and pass feedback?

Will it be possible to buy the phone outright from either Telecom or Vodafone on launch or will it be exclusive to on-account first?

Parallel Importers are doing it for $799. Looking on Ebay you can import one for $680NZD+GST

http://www.parallelimported.co.nz/iphone-5c-16gb-white-mobile-phone.html

At a guess it would be $850-$899 from telecom or vodafone.

Behodar: eracode was the first to post it though!

Correct - but evidently not deemed to be correct enough to be The Answer.

Based purely on the last 3 years experience, it'll be contract only until stock numbers are stable, which is usually 2-3 months after launch. If you want one outright, order from Apple direct.

So... any speculation as to when online orders will open?  Midnight on the 24th?  I am determined to get my hands on one as soon as I can!
