If you choose optimised storage in settings then it downloads them until your device starts to get low on storage then it will remove them to make room. If you choose download originals then all photos are stored locally and you have to manage the storage.

How do you manage the storage? There doesn't appear to be any way to delete photos off the device locally without also deleting them from the iCloud Photo Library.

You don't delete them, iOS sorts it out itself when space is needed.
Originals get uploaded to iCloud and a thumbnail is left on the device for previewing.
The original is downloaded again if you try to view the full photo again.

Yeah sorry I didn't explain that well. I should have said if you keep photos stored on the device then you have to manage storage space for apps, downloaded music, things like that. Optimised storage is probably best as then iOS will manage it as above.

I think some cars have wireless charging pads in them (don't quote me on this)

Not sure about NZ but my brother has a Toyota pickup in the US (larger than a Hilux but not massive - can't recall the model) and that has one as a factory fitment.

Yikes, correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like the entry-level iPhone X is NZ $500 more expensive than the Galaxy S8?!

Both 5.8" bezel-less screen, both 64GB (although the S8 is expandable)

iPhone X $1,799, Galaxy S8 $1,299

The correct comparison is the Note8 actually. so $1,799 vs $1,599

Still expensive in comparison, not to mention Samsung discount virtually from day dot, which is likely why their sales figures are catching iPhone.

How, let me repeat this, just how ....... HOW? How can you compare an iPhone X with a Note 8 ???? I know (and have long come to expect) that websites love to compare model releases side by side only on a tech by tech basis.

But how can people compare an Apple with a Note? They are worlds and worlds apart, and any comparison of either, is doing the other a massive disservice.

Can someone tell me how a curved glass screen is of any advantage? My eyes and fingers can't go around the front panel surely. Was looking at the 6.3" Note 8 for the wife but just can't get past the curved screen.

Being a long time Note user, (forced to use the S7 Edge when the Note was withdrawn), I can assure you that a curved edge is nothing more than a fleeting "Wow". If you can't get past the curved screen, buy her the Galaxy S8, or the older style iPhone. Quite simple really and better value for money.

I really wanted Apple to bring some competition into the marketplace after Sammy's problems last year. But it hasn't happened. They missed the boat again.

The only competition we have seen this year is how much the suppliers can fleece the consumers and, how high fan boys of both camps are willing to jump or bend over with eyes shut tight as they take it up the "wallet" and continue to support extortion in the name of "I must have it".

If you love your wife as much as I do mine, take her away for a few days instead. You will enjoy it more lol.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have curved screens.

I went from an aging iphone 6+ to my current Huawei P9+ (mostly because I liked the more open android app and hardware ecosystems and the option of memory card expansion), and don't see anything in these new phones that I can't get in an Android device for a lower price (or even in an older iphone - I've been tempted by the idea of having a "cheap" SE as a secure phone to travel with).

The removal of touch ID in the X is a definite strike against it for me; the convenience of being able to pick up and unlock the phone at night without having to look directly into that glowing rectangle is irreplaceable. I prefer having the fingerprint reader on the back of the phone anyway (but not in the ridiculous Samsung layout where it's directly beside the camera). Even if it can be unlocked 100% of the time within a second of looking into the camera (and I'm definitely interested in hearing about that reliability there when it's in the wild), I'd still go with one I can unlock it while I'm picking it up and have tactile feedback that it's unlocked before I have to look at it.

mattwnz: Apparently it uses the universal Qi standard (or something like that) so should work wit most new ones using this.

Other around the net have been commenting that for once, Apple used the same standard as the rest of the industry instead of being different. Maybe the reality that these types of chargers are already in cars and can't be retro fitted made them stick to this standard?

Maybe not. I think they trialed this with the previous 5SE model which was only available in 16GB and 64GB versions. Think of it this way
* 64GB for the ordinary office user who makes phone calls an checks mail only.
* 256GB for everybody else because of photo & game storage requirements

Edit: and looking at the current line up of 7+ in the Apple store, you have 32GB and 128GB. That intermediate tier seems to be gone.

If it turns out Face ID is good, I'll most likely be upgrading my 7+ to the X

Paul1977: My biggest concern with the X is the complete lack of TouchID. I know they couldn't make it work reliably under the screen, but it makes me nervous not having it at all. If FaceID works well, then it might be alright,

Nobody here has mentioned the secure enclave that your TouchID data is stored in using a dedicated processor. Is there a secure enclave equivalent for Face ID?

Too true. Also, with TouchID, you can

* unlock the phone as you pick it up

* unlock the phone for somebody else to operate without taking your eyes off the road.

JPNZ: Nobody has mentioned the A11 much yet.. What an absolute BEAST this phone trounces everything Android has.. It even beats the base model 2017 Macbook Pro

Geektastic: Another $1000 will get you a very powerful MacBook Pro...so it does seem slightly expensive.

nas: It's also getting close to base model MacBook Pro price territory

It's the same price as the new MacBook and ±$600 more expensive than the current 13"MacBook Air

Does the new iPhone X functionality really beat the functionality of a laptop that much to justify this price?
