Either a) someone decided to update the information and the web admins were not fast enough putting up new pages (unlikely) or b) Apple demanded Vodafone take down reference to iPhone from their site due to disagreements.

You take your pick...

i'd like to pick (b) because a scandal like that should hopefully get engadget and gizmodo interested in us, but its way more likely to be (a) :(

Totally agreed, I am angry and frustrated over the launch, but to be honest I still want one.
so I feel like a storm in a teacup, Vodafone embarrassed Apple AND themselves in this instance.

Hopefully they will work to make it better in future months.

I was on the fence about iPhone 4 but after this fiasco, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S to see how I find Android. Once it arrives next week I'm cancelling my contract with Vodafone.

The iPhone 4 still looks really nice, so can understand those who are willing to wait to get one. I think I can do without.

geekiegeek: Just placed my order for a 32GB, bring on 3 weeks! I feel lost as I just changed jobs and had to hand in my 3GS on Friday. Have to use a Nokia 1208 untill then - its bloody awefull!

I'm in the same boat... My girlfriend is getting an iPhone 4, and it's time I got a nice smartphone as well... I was probably going to cave when I saw her new iPhone and buy one myself (I have and really like an iPod Touch).

However with the absolute shambles of a launch here, I really felt horribly uncomfortable giving my money to Apple (and VF, although as a Telecom staff member, that should go without saying :-) and as a result, have just ordered an HTC Desire instead - for use on XT naturally!

Now, I may end up hating it, and selling it for an iPhone 4 eventually (once my GF gets hers)... But it's as a direct result of how badly the iPhone 4 launch was handled that led me to giving Android a proper chance.

I frequently berate people for whinging and then supporting the companies they whinge incessantly about, so I really had no choice but to act as I would prefer others did. Congrats Caldazar - It's only this sort of behaviour that will change what happens.

Has either vodafone or Apple actually "manned up" to the masses and admitted blame or accepted responsibilty for what has happened? I mean Paul reynolds fronted up for XT's woes, thought either company woudl have tried to do the same, especially given the VF "pisstaking" of XTs network issues.

I don't think we'll see it personally.

As I said to the Telecom senior employee on Friday regarding the iPhone 4 launch, Telecom f'd up and they came clean (at least that's my perception, I don't know the truth behind it all) and Paul fronted up.

The opposite has taken place with regards iPhone 4 launch. SNAFU is appropriate here. The contempt that has been displayed has been quite disturbing.

Which is why I'm more than happy to wait the 3 weeks to receive mine from Apple direct. I wouldn't be happy with myself buying one now from VF, and I'm hoping for great things from 2D come Tuesday.

I am just as keen to hear criticism of my post as well as any other comments.

One thing your post doesn't mention (and this has been consistent across all reporting I've seen of this launch fiasco) is Apples press release earlier in the week which mentioned that the iPhone 4 would be available for outright purchase from authorised resellers, which as we all know never eventuated. I note you did mention that VF refused to sell the phone outright, but when I asked in a Vodafone store a couple of months back they said that this was the standard policy for their brick and mortar stores, so no real surprises there.

I guess that is a particular sore point for me, as being a pre-pay customer I was looking for a way to purchase the phone outright on Friday (as Apple told me I would be able to do). Instead (and after checking with a few clueless brick and mortar outlets on Saturday) I've ordered it via the Apple store, and now have a 4 week wait.

And as one final sad twist, ironically the order process kept failing in Safari on Snow Leopard, so I had to resort to FireFox to complete the order.

A complete failure of nearly your entire network, and a shortage of iPhones, cant really be compared...

XT failures damaged their reputation with their core customers, and was headline news for nearly a couple of months.

VNFZ shortage of iPhones would have affected 0.1% of the population, and maybe 5% of their customer base, & its a complete non issue for the rest of their customers.

"Okay, okay. Australia and Hong Kong had massive queues and that’s never going to happen on that kind of scale here. But the fact is we never asked for rockstars and Masterchef contestants filling us with roast pork belly and booze, and we don’t expect it because we’re little old New Zealand and we’re just not that flashy.

What we do ask for is to be treated with just a little bit of respect. Clearly somebody knew the launch wasn’t happening in the morning, but people were still left to queue all night in freezing conditions and in the dark as to what was going on, and then even in the morning the communication just wasn’t there."

Yup no doubt, I would question wether they were allowed to say anything first.....

Yup no doubt, I would question wether they were allowed to say anything first.....

I don't think that is the point either. Whether they were allowed or not, whether somebody decided to or not. The end result was no one knew what the hell was going on! That's the frustrating thing IMO.
