I'm pretty excited about the launch of the iPhone 4. The only other iPhone I have had is a 3G, which I had for about a week before flicking it on Trade Me because of a number of things it couldn't do that my I had prior N95 could.

As they have pretty much fixed everything that bothered me, and my current phone (A Nokia E72) has the worst firmware I have ever had on a phone, by far, I want a new phone ASAP, and it's gonna be an iPhone 4.

I haven't followed previous launches, so I don't really know how Apple usually plays these in NZ, but being only around 9 days from the rumored launch date of 24 July and having not heard anything, I am starting to wonder if we will actually see it this month.

What does everyone think, based on what Apple have done with the 3G/3GS launches in NZ?

I'm expecting that we'll know more by end of day tomorrow. There was an email sent last Friday to those who had signed up for more info via the Vodafone site, saying something along the lines of "We'll let you know more about the MicroSIM and the iPhone 4 within the next week".

My best guess is a launch on Thursday 29th or Friday 30th July. Total guess though - I have no sources or inside knowledge.

And of course the press conference on Friday might change things...

I reckon it's going to be delayed for at least another month purely because of the reception issues.

Seeing Apple is calling for a Press conference Friday (Saturday NZ time), I am pretty sure those who accepted the "software issue" explanation for reception issues will have something to think about.

I'm predicting that Apple will acknowledge the problem at the press conference on Friday with the internal aerial which can be overcome by covering the bottom corner. They will then go on to announce that all customers will be entitled to a free bumper with the purchase of their phone. This is the cheap(est) out for apple with this major problem.

All indicators from around the web with regard to the next set of countries in the release will be 29/30 July. Heres hoping!

It's a big ROFL - buying a $1200 phone that works well if you cover it with rubber, that it's not even part of the original design.

"Thinner smartphone"...

I totally agree that this goes against the design.  Option 1 for Apple: recall at a cost of over 1 billion or Option 2 provide bumpers at a cost of a few million.

Option 2 provide bumpers at a cost of a few million (and having their "hip" customer being ridiculed for pouring money on a badly designed handset).

But let's wait for the press conference to end before we get there...

I'm definitely hoping for a minor (very minor) hardware change -?perhaps a clear coating applied in the final stages of manufacturing, if that would do the trick.

There's no way I would hide the device behind any kind of case or bumper - I've gone case-less with two iPhones so far and have had no issues. The screen on my 3G looks brand new and that's after a few throws down the stairs (accidentally) and several drops on hard floors.

That'd be option 3....provide a small sticker in the same colour silver as the iPhone 4 at a cost of a few dollars(20k maybe) vs option 2(40k when you factor in cheap labour, 200k retail price)

Option 4: provide a small tin of clear nail polish

Option 5: Most likely, tell people Left handers are the devil and right handers can only own iPhones

Haha, so is my Wife, that's why I told her she couldn't have an iPhone and gave her my old Galaxy :)
