khull: installed Tomtom GPS on it today, loads up instantly and looking pretty sweet

Me too. Much nicer interface than my 2 yr old tomtom, picks up gps signal instantly (unlike my other one) and works fine perched on the passenger seat or in the door of the car. It's a great app. Only downside is its attempt to pronounce a lot of road names is laughably poor but you can shut it up.

if you have a 4.0.1 phone it probably has just increased in value (temporarily) today since the new iOS4.0.2 patch is out

Reg Facetime: I ported from XT & was told it would all happen by 4pm on the friday, so turned on the Iphone & it could send txt & make calls. But it could not receive them, Incoming calls & txt still went to my XT phone. A subsequent customer service call on the saturday told me it could take up to 4 workings days.. but it had finally all happened by the monday morning

What facetime then did was send lots of activation txt's as it did not receive the hidden reply from Apple saying the # was registered!

So I have a few International txt messages to get Voda to refund..... lets see what the billing team say as it is day 3 & I have not heard back from them. And considering the voda store told me the port would be Complete by 4pm that friday I am blaming them :)

Currently writing this post on my iPhone 4 in Blenheim. I've had the phone for a few weeks now and have come to realize buying it was a big mistake. When I get back home I'll make a more in depth post but my major gripes:

- scrolling in safari, the magnifying glass and/or copy highlight appears with infuriating frequency.
- battery life is disappointing.
- multi tasking is poor. Had to look on google to find out how to close apps, and ended up having about 15 open when I found out how.
- antenna. In my room I have appalling vodafone reception (truly the worst I have experienced in my life). I can quite easily lose reception completely if I innocuously touch the black line.
- texting. I have never had a non touch screen phone, and I can not get the hang of this phone. I keep making mistakes and it's not getting any better.

More will follow as I said.

haha in the eternal words of steve jobs, trust the iphone. the keyboard will autocorrect your mistakes. btw you know you can turn it on its side and use landscape keyboard right?

Yes, however the auto correction more often than not makes changes I don't want before I realize it. Landscape doesn't really help so much.

-I have to say the cut/copy is way more sensitive and a pain when editing tweets on twitter app
-Battery life was crap but back to what I had on 3G now I have turned off push from automatic to manual
-Reception fine on XT but rather weak on Vodafone sorry

Good points
-Screen, photo and video super crisp - love it
-Generally seems alot faster
-liking the camera and being able to forward face
-Now I have worked out how to use mulitasking it has been useful e.g. in middle of adding contact or tweet and need to check info on another app, don't have to cancel what doing to get to info I need and then start again
-I loved my 3G but I love the 4 more :-)

Both issues are more than likely associated with Vodafone. I got 2 bars tops and putting it in my pocket at home resulted in 'no service' I tried Vodafone a few days and it did my head in. Now getting 2 days and ~6hrs usage. I'm guessing it was eating the battery continually looking for service. Death grip was real with Vodafone but i'm unable to kill it on XT.

With regards to battery life - don't forget you're carrying around in your pocket what was effectively a desktop not so long ago!

One thing...

Do I let the battery go dead and then charge it?

Are you meant to reset the usage stats every time I charge? as my "Time since last full charge never updated from when I last charged overnight....

It'll take a few charges to come up to full capacity, Apple also recommend running it flat till it turns off once a month.

Run it flat then charge it full uninterrupted charge, then your battery gauge will be accurate.

I'm finding the battery life on the 4 almost double that of my 3GS. Battery life expectancy took a nose dive with iOS4, had to charge it every 1.5 days which I was not used to. I'm back out to 3-4 days per charge on the iPhone 4. Incredible.

If you don't need the Spotlight search, switch it off. It's basically like the Indexing service on a Windows PC, always on, usually doing something. It's a big resource and battery hog.

I've got indexing on contacts only, Also for work i've got the 'Good Technology' client installed and thats a bit of a hog... definately don't want that in the background.

I have noticed sometimes the double click for app switching doesnt get recognised in email or messaging... a bit annoying....

What do you mean by "multi-tasking is poor"?

By the way, you almost certainly don't have 15 apps running. Especially if one or two of them are games.

The double-home-click tray is not a task manager, think of it as a recently used item list instead. Sure, the first two or three items on the list might still be processing something, but they are most likely suspended (unless they're a VoIP app or a location-based app) anyway. iOS automatically kills most of the suspended apps within a few minutes.

Don't worry about what's in the list and whether its running, it's not worth your time.
