Woohoo! All unlocked and working on Vodafone.

I ended up using a free unlock tool which was ironically sent to me by a guy that I had paid for an iPhoneSimFree licence (which I never received). I don't mind, his free solution (which works on a basic GUI on the iPhone itself - literally 2 clicks and a short wait and it's unlocked) was still far easier than the SSH/Terminal/minicom stuff I had tried earlier to no avail.

The hardest bit was getting a connection to the iPhone via Wifi (using Fugu which is an SCP/SFTP client for Mac) to upload the app, it takes so long to connect and more often than not gives you some kind of error about security key changing or something boring.

Good to hear it's all working.

There was a full GUI version of the software unlock released several hours later, which i guess is less scary for those who've not touched minicom before.

User error is right! I was changing the IP of my iPhone left right and center to try and hit bingo with Fugu. Worked eventually though so I must've done something right!

Next challenge is trying to figure out why (or rather, waiting for someone who knows what they're doing to figure it out) I can't get Voicemail and WhoCalled TXTs from Vodafone.

Operator SMS (used for VM box icons) doesn't seem to work on on the iPhone on most networks, due to the way the iPhone handles those types of text messages. I believe the TurboSIM could be used to fix that, by doing some translation on the incoming sms so that the phone responds like it does to any other txt message. Might look further into that if I get a chance.

Who Called txt's are only send when your phone is turned off (or out of coverage) and someone calls. If they don't leave a message it'll notify you of who tried to call you.

Ok so WhoCalled now works, but the strangest thing happens - I get 2 TXTs per each WhoCalled event - one that says 'your official WhoCalled txt is about to arrive. Due to the model of your phone, this txt is required to arrive beforehand' or something like that, and then the proper one comes through a second later.

This is really handy since iPhones currently can't receive messages from non-numerical contacts (so they can't receive one from 'Voicemail' but they can from '707').

Anyone know if there's a way I can ask Vodafone to do the same thing with VoiceMail txts as they do with WhoCalled? So they'd send me 2 Voicemail TXTs… It's getting annoying having to guess when people have left messages and just trying my luck with 707!

That's the trade off you make when using unsupported hardware.

I highly doubt Vodafone will change their voicemail systems to support a few iPhones with incomplete SMS support, in NZ. ;-)

Who knows, we may see this bug fixed in a software update ;-)

Why do they do this? I get the same on my Treo 750v, hardly an "unsupported" phone, and never got around asking why...

I'm not quite sure why they do it, it might be that our phones (as far as Vodafone's network assumes) refuse TXTs from random numbers (like 706 or something) unless they are first given a taster from a similar number?

Or perhaps it's because otherwise your phone would reject the TXT message since it comes from a landline number like 09 xxx xxxx, which your phone doesn't think is capable of messaging?

It's all just guesses, I have no clue of the technical side of what I just mentioned.

If that were the case though, why would only certain users with certain handsets be getting these double messages?

And back to my original question, is there a way I can get Vodafone to do the same for Voicemail TXTs? I don't want to have to wait for the next iPhone update, especially considering it'll probably relock a great many phone.

I don't think Vodafone can or would change the way they handle standard voicemail notification on a per user basis. I believe the main problem here is the inability of the iPhone to properly handle strings in the source address. When the source address is made up of just numbers sms works fine.

Found this on how the "mailbox" icon (message waiting indicator) is controlled via sms:

Message Waiting Indication Group: Store Message
This Group allows an indication to be provided to the user about the status of types of
message waiting on systems connected to the GSM PLMN. The mobile may present this
indication as an icon on the screen, or other MMI indication. The mobile may take note of
the Origination Address for messages in this group and group 1100. For each indication
supported, the mobile may provide storage for the Origination Address which is to control
the mobile indicator.
Text included in the user data is coded in the Default Alphabet.
Where a message is received with bits 7..4 set to 1101, the mobile shall store the text of
the SMS message in addition to setting the indication.
Bits 3 indicates Indication Sense:
Bit 3
0 Set Indication Inactive
1 Set Indication Active
Bit 2 is reserved, and set to 0
Bit 1 Bit 0 Indication Type:
0 0 Voicemail Message Waiting
0 1 Fax Message Waiting
1 0 Electronic Mail Message Waiting
1 1 Other Message Waiting*
* Mobile manufacturers may implement the “Other Message Waiting” indication as an
additional indication without specifying the meaning. The meaning of this indication is
intended to be standardized in the future, so Operators should not make use of this
indication until the standard for this indication is finalized.

Ok, so that basically means that an SMS message from Voicemail would contain that '0 0 Voicemail Message Waiting' code? In which case it would alert the iPhone to change the VoiceMail icon?

yeah. Basically, from what I see there are specific bits set in part of the SMS 'header' which informs the phone to turn the message indication on or off, and control whether the phone displays the message to the user as well. Other than that it's just a standard text message.
